Shuttle have a windows based BIOS flashing util (though I'd be suprised if Kezzer hasn't already done the update )

Samsung HDs seem to have the best reputation for noise levels. Seagate should also be one to consider tough AFAIK most manufacturers have gone over to fluid bearings now so they only ought to differ from each other in seek noise (www.storagereview.com takes dBA measures from each drive they test IIRC so it might be worth checking there before you order anything).

As far as optical drives go Nero DriveSpeed is a good idea (reduces the maximum rotational speed and hence the amount of noise they make). And either a DVD write or a CDRW / DVD ROM combo depending on your budget.

If you want to quieten it down you might want to consider swapping out the standard 80mm fan for a noise blocker (www.tekheads.co.uk have these as well as a few other places)

No problem. In that case I'd recommend the lastest nForce drivers - nVidia released new ones on Monday:

Not really no - but mine had the very first revision of the BIOS in it so I flashed it as soon as I got it... There's usually some improvement between the very first and latest version. IIRC it did add something useful but I can't remember what it was so it can't have been that important

    Ah... There you go:

FN41S018 - Added Ultra-Low Fan speed Control (which is what my fans are always set to)

Bobby it's got a fairly recent BIOS revision which was pre-done before it even got shipped off from Shuttle so I would say that there would be no RAM issues at all. I didn't flash the BIOS as the differences in the revisions made no impact on the shuttle to me.

Mine has mega ram issues but that's because there's no voltage increase option for the ram and I like to run horrifically tight settings (mmm, 2-2-2). Only BH5 chips would allow me to crank the FSB with the tightest settings possible and it's uber hard to find 2 x 512mb BH5 for under £200 nowadays

I also ripped out the stock fan and put a nice quiet panaflo fan in with the result that it's always at the same speed. Guess there's not much point in flashing. I'll only end up breaking it
