    New System Help

    Hi All,
This is my first post here although have been here a few times in the past for guidance.

I am hoping to buy a new PC and was hoping for some advice.

    The system is as follows:-

    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    Asus K8V Deluxe M/board
    512 DDR (400Mhz)
ATI Radeon 9550 128Mb (tv out + DVI)
    Soundblaster 1024 5.1 soundcard.

Obviously hard drive, disc drives etc

Are there any of the components I have listed that should not be touched with a bargepole and if so any alternatives.
Oh and money is quite tight lol.

    Thanks,
    James

The Asus board should have more than capable sound. Hate Soundblaster cards. Just my opinion mind.
& a 9800 no pro that's softmodable would be better.

IMHO It's not worth getting a sound card unless you're looking above Live level - onboard audio keeps up with these ancient things now very well (this card is about 5 years old now!)

If you're on a budget - it may be worth you saving 70 quid ish by going for XP2400 and NF7-S and spending it on getting a 9800Pro instead
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

    Thanks for the replies people.

In reply to the question of what it is to be used for, nothing major. No serious gaming, just normal every day things...photo editing, bit of basic web site building, g/friends college work etc.

I was intending to base it on a system from Carerra that had a good write up recently...hence the Athlon 64 processor. Just trying to get the most for my money hoping that it will be a system that serves me for a good few years. The online configurator can be found here

Never had a prob, either with a 9500,9800pro or X800XT PE on my board.

hmm well as others have said, a better gfx card would serve you better than an A64CPU

better mobo [ie none asus ] would be good too

I've had loads of problems with asus mobos, from basic instability, to the boards wipieing thier own bioses. maybe i was just unlucky but...hmm i dont like asus anymore

So it would seem the ATI Radeon 9550 128Mb (tv out + DVI)
gets a bit of a thumbs down.
Any views on nVidia Geforce FX 5900 XT 128mb(TV OUT DVI).

Would that go with the ASUS mobo?? Any views on ASROCK mobo's

Was looking at the A64 processor to try and make it as future proof as is poss, hoping to keep it for a while.
Starting to wish I hadnt started this, getting more confused by the minute :-)

Sorry for sounding a bit dim about all this but previous systems have always been bog standard large retailer affairs.

IMHO the 5900 XT is a bit overpriced - 9800 Pros are available for 120 quid atm - and are probably the best value for money card you can get.

It's OK to be confused - we all have to start somewhere - it might be helpful if you could tell us how much you're looking to spend in total, then we can look at balancing up the system.

Was hoping to keep it at or below the £600 mark.
And as I was thinking of buying it from Carrera

    http://www.carrerassc.co.uk/carrera_...sp?systemvar=y

the choice of components isnt vast.

The Radeon 9800 they do is the pro model and it is ATI (£96 upgrade) which people have said dont mix very well with ASUS mobos but would be in the price range if I went with the ASROCK mobo. The 5900XT is £73.

    So, in conclusion,
I am just about decided on the CPU, and RAM and will probably stick with the on board sound. Just need to decide on the MOBO and G/card. Also would the difference of upgrading to an 8MB cache H/D be noticeable.

    Cheers,
    James

If you are not going to do too much gaming then any recent graphics card is fine. If the 9800 pro is a £98 upgrade from the 5900xt, then get the xt. They are perfectly good cards that will play any recent game in playable settings!

Sorry didnt make that too clear. The standard system comes with
nVidia FX5500 128mb, but it has been said this isnt much cop???
The nVidia GForceFX5900XT upgrade is £73
The ATI Radeon 9800pro upgrade is £96, so only £23 more.

As the system is not being used for much gaming would the FX5500 be adequate or is it really best avoided, bearing in mind at present I have Nvidia GFoce 2 integrated :-(
