I need some help here, mobo related.

Im considering an upgrade, but I think my mobo might need replacing..
Its a 8k5a series mobo and according to the manual is only rated to 2000XP its also only 4x agp..
Firstly, can a bios upgrade change any of these for the better, secondly does 4x agp slow down a radeon 9800pro?

From what I've heard, 4x AGP shouldn't make that much difference from 8x AGP. I wouldn't upgrade your motherboard just to get 8x AGP since it barely matters in my opinion.

If it can support an xp 2000+ it will also support a 2400+, or any other 133Mhz FSB AMD chip for socket A...might need a bios update to get it recognised though.

Its a tempter, you reckon hl2 wont run on a 1900+, my thought would be that it would aslong as the gfx/ram were up to scratch..?

even a cheep mobo could do better then that... 8X agp would help! But not much.. I always need the best, so if I were you I'd go for an 8X and an barton 3000.. or simular!

I would first learn how to spell (You know who im talking about )
Dont bother getting a new mobo. Upgrade another weaker part of your system such as your ram. You haven't specified how much you have

Ill spell you shogun.. right up the ying-yang.

Well, I have 1Gigabyte of DDR along with a soon to be 9800pro 128mb. Compared to those parts my 1900xp+ seems alittle rusty, but if it requires a mobo upgrade maybe it isnt worth it.
This is computing on a budget by the way

Sticking in the fastest CPU you mainboard will take is the cheapest option and another 500mHz is better than nothing IMO. It's also a quick and easy upgrade to make.

Consider Abit NF7 £45 main board and a 2500+ mobile athlon CPU £60 + monster sized air cooler £20. Just done an upgrade for a friend and overclocked 12x200 2400mHz (approx 3400+) at 1.725 and only 44 deg C under load. Over 17000 3dMark2001 and 5500 3dMark2003 with a 9800pro.

Heh, im really hoping I wont have to get into cooler territory but that seems some damn fine performance for the price of a hefto fan.. What case did you use for that, or can it be any halfdecent case? I run a midi tower, which currently gives me 58/32 degrees running an athlon 1900 and a geeforce 4 Ti 4200, I can see those numbers getting even worse as I up the hardware.

I used this mahoosively big heatsink. I didn't enjoy fitting it but sure does work well enough. Used a nice coolermaster case with 4 fans but I only connected one 80mm case fan to keep the noise low. Only other air flow through case via fan in the powersupply. Case temp was high 20's or low 30's.

    edit> it's a thermaltake silent tower
