    CDRW/DVD help!

My samsung sm352b in my shuttle is refusing to write cd's completely and makes a sound like its going to take off every time it accesses. Is this because I put the latest firmware on there. I did this a while ago but cannot remember using it to write discs until now. Should I get a new one? If so what make? I have no need for a dvd rewriter at present, so another combo drive would be best.

What burning software are you using? DVD writers are probably a better buy than a combo drive. They're only a couple of quid more and have a better resale value.

Have used the supplied easy CD creator and also nero trial version. Both bail out towards the end. Also the noise worries me a lot. So if the DVD writers are good, who makes a decent black one then? Should it be dual layer etc etc...

Try some other brands of CD-Rs to burn.

I'm using a Samsung CDRW and it is a bit noisy - works fine with the bundled software (Easy CD Creator) and using XP but won't copy on the fly with Nero. I would go with Proplus and try different media to see if it works. If you keep your eye on Microdirect about once or twice a week they do 24 hour offers on DVD writers. Yesterday or the day before NEC2510's (8 speed dual layer) were up for about £50 and standard 2500's at about £41 (in black).
