Don't understand WHY?????????????????
I use a Scythe Shuriken CPU Cooler,
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...1/913756-a.jpg
The other day my system shut down by itself and I notice the cpu fan has stop working.
I test the fan and found it will only spin blowing air up and will stop when blowing air down as it was design to do.
I have checked and look at the wiring and all looks ok with no loose connections.
Need someone to tell me how this is possible and can it be fix.
Re: Don't understand WHY?????????????????
Bearing worn out?? Fan blades being caught on the housing??

Don't think so, fan spin fine with the wiring on top and no sign of it catching the housing. As soon as I start turning it the other way I can see it slowing down then stopping but as I turn it back it speeds up again.
Re: Don't understand WHY?????????????????
Yeah that's classic bearing/motor dying(usually caused by the lube pooling at the bottom). Not much you can do about it, except buy a new fan. Giving it a good shake the running it upside down at full pelt for a little while will sometimes get them going again, but once it's happened it will happen again. Not worth risking your CPU for a £10 component IMO.
Re: Don't understand WHY?????????????????
Scythe use sleeve bearings on their low profile coolers AFAIK. These wear out quicker.
Re: Don't understand WHY?????????????????
Thanks guys. Will now go shopping for a new fan. In the process of building an itx system so really need the fan.
Re: Don't understand WHY?????????????????
The cooler in the OP uses a 100MM X 12MM fan.
One of these fans would probably be able to replace the old one:
http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/cgi-bin/s...00MM&ACTION=Go!
These are the specifications for the fan:
• Model Name: Shuriken CPU Cooler
• Model Number: SCSK-1000
• Compatibility:
-Intel: Socket 478 All Speeds, Socket T / LGA 775 / 1366 i7's All Speeds
-AMD: Socket 754 All Speeds, Socket 939 All Speeds, Socket AM2 All Speeds, Socket AM2+ All Speeds, Socket 940 All Speeds
• Dimension: 105x116x64 mm (Overall Dimension), 100x100x12 mm (Fan Dimension)
• Fan Speed: 650±200 rpm ~ 2,200 rpm (±10%)
• Fan Noise: 10.5 dBA ~ 31.67 dBA
• Air Flow: 11.81 CFM ~ 31.91 CFM = 20 m³/h ~ 54 m³/h
• Weight: 355 g
The main issue the Scythe fans I suggested, although the right size are not PWM. Hence, ideally would go for the higher CFM fan, although noise at idle will be higher.

Thanks CAT. ATM I have got a Akasa 140mm fan sitting on top of the heat sink keeping the X3 very cool. I am going to see if I can transfer this into my Lian li PC-Q11 itx case for my new build.
