VERY interesting! Props for them doing such an exhaustive test.
It's confirmed a few things, that I had come to the conclusion myself about my Silverstone Strider Plus 500w PSU:
1. It's 83% efficient in normal use. Being 80+ Bronze and fairly cheap, I didn't expect much more.
2. It can supply 500w all day with no problems and only 3% lower efficiency.
3. It's built high quality in terms of holding it's voltage and with top 10 - lowest ripple scores on test. Happy with that.
4. It's not a quiet PSU. I had noticed this using my ears but the test confirms it. 37.6dba low load 38.3dba high load. Yuk.
So I was wondering what to do. Shall I rip it apart and fit a new fan? Or shall I get another PSU. This test confirms no new PSU needed (if I had I may have ended up with one that was worse!) - just order a quiet 120mm fan from SCAN and get the screwdriver out. :-)
Cheers Cat for the link.
Butuz
wow thats pretty spectacular!
brilliant resource cheers for the heads up CTF
Great find, this will be useful for deciding a psu for my new rig. Thanks.
A lot of typos (once it's Sweek, then it's Sweex again .. and FSP is now apparently FST) and some inconsistencies though.
How could they possibly test the Sweex junk PSU's ripple at 500W load if it blew up at 300W!? O_o
I mean.. it's definitely helpful, but .. yeah.. there's some weird stuff going on..
The old Johnny Guru reviews of cheap PSU's are always good for a chuckle. More amusing than the usual good branded ones which always play nice. Slow day at work, might peruse these to pass time.
I know not everyone has Physics GCSE (or equivalent), but charge is *not* measured in volts  Once again someone comes a cropper trying to use technical language that they don't fully understand :DQuote:
A power supply should deliver a charge of 3.3V, 5V and 12V.
haha jim that bit gave me a chuckle :D.
Exhaustive list but id like them to test the thermaltake toughpower 675w etc, they only seem to have 2 low end TT psus :(, good list apart from that though be interesting to see the results when i get time!
Thanks for posting this, CAT-THE-FIFTH (I'm sure I've seen your username elsewhere), thanks given. Interesting read. So glad I ordered the Corsair AX650 earlier today.
I am on OcUK too,and sometimes post on the SA and TPU forums. If I only I could profit from my forum time,I could actually afford a better setup than what I have now...! I just hope the backlight holds out on my old monitor for another year(its six years old now)! :(
Good find mate, just re-iterates a lot of what the good folk here always say!
Thanks.
would be even better if they posted pics of the internals so the build quality and design can be compared.
Hexus did one like this in 2005: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/psu/13...-taoyuan-2005/
Obviously useless today, but still, interesting stuff
Nice to see the Corsair AX series come out on top.
They really are worth the premium.
