Can I run XP32 as main OS on a 64bit mobo and CPU?

I've been offered a Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 (rev. 1.x) mobo,AMD Athlon 4000 CPU and 2GB RAM of Freecycle to get me back in business after my mobo fried.

Can I run XP32 as the main OS on a 64 bit mobo/cpu?

    Thanks,

    Frank

Re: Can I run XP32 as main OS on a 64bit mobo and CPU?

Yes, you definitely can do this, all Athlon 64 CPUs operate in either 32/64 bit mode, or 32/16 bit mode. If you try to run a 32-bit OS, it'll use the 32/16 bit mode.

Bear in mind you may need to find drivers for XP though - that OS is ten years old, and many hardware manufacturers stopped caring about it a long time ago.

I can't afford any hardware just now as job hunting. It might not be the best time to migrate to a 64 bit Win OS, with Win 8 anticipated in October and no upgrade discount finalised.

My mail client Turnpike won't run in Win 7 64

Once I'm working again and can upgrade HW and OS to Win 7 / Win 8 looks like I'll have to run the e-mail client in a XP32 VM until I can find a suitable migration path and be bothered migrating all the mailbase .

Gigabyte support website for that motherboard has driver downloads for Win XP for everything, as far as I can see. Do you have an AGP graphics card to use with it? The motherboard doesn't have on-board graphics so you'll need a discreet card.

Thanks. Yeah, I have an AGP8 card (even still have an archaic Matrox Millenium 2 card if the worst comes to the worst).

Aargh, I can't get a hold of the guy who offered the mobo etc now. Still working through some of the e-mails I rxed offering other mobos, some Intel.

Are 64 bit Intel CPU/mobos also capable of running 32bit OSes? ie would I be able to plug my XP32 HDD in and go?

It's a nightmare trying to source stuff from locked down public computers.

Re: Can I run XP32 as main OS on a 64bit mobo and CPU?

yes they are, I've run both an i5 750 and my current phenomII x4 on xp (still not yet gone over to win7 mainly because of the hassle of reinstalling everything) I do plan in finally going over to win7 in a couple of months

Biggest issue is hard drive sata mode, xp doesn't have native ACHI drivers, so the simpliest way to get round it is to make sure the sata drives are set to legacy or pata mode (depends on the bios to what it's called)

I've yet to see anything important enough about windows8 to want me to go over to it, the main difference seems to be a better touch screen interface and support for ARM processors (first time windows has supported non x86 that I know of)
It does seem to be mainly aimed at the growing tablet market rather than the pc market.
