I have me an Icy Box, with a 3.5" maxtor in it. The panels of the Icy Box are aluminium and act pretty good as heat spreaders. The only trouble is one of them isn't making contact with drive, it's about 2mm above it.
Any ideas on a pad or something I could use to allow heat to be transferred onto it?

Thin peice of sheet alu with that free sample thermal tape stuff.. forgot the name of the comany though.. began with C.... that should do.... - if you can find them... IIRC the one you want is t410 or t411, got a piece of t411 here infact (t410 was better).

does the drive have to be raised 2mm?
There's a review of the Icy Box on HEXUS, posted today infact! I have a slightly different version but only the interface, the case is the same.
If I raise the drive a couple of mm to meet it, it won't touch at the other side! I'll look at that stuff Silent, cheers.
Right, the only trouble with that stuff is it's sticky. I'd prefer something that was just sandwiched in the space, although I might end up getting that stuff...

how big is the gap? use a peice of aluminuim.. you dont need thermal tape, if you can get the size resonably near...

What about putting it in the 5 1/2 bays instead, using rubber spacers to stop viabration and sticking a silent fan underneath to cool it, like one of the akasa ones...

I have a HDD enclosure which I bought about a year ago. It's very similar apart from the sides are steel painted black with the words 'Speed Metal' written on the front. It also has two LEDs in the corner rather than the funkeh blue stuff.. The black paint is flaking off and it looks nasty, but that review has inspired me to do some modding!

Are the sides of the drive touching? thats the best place to disipate it...
The top and bottom arnt really important.. though if the chips on the bottom get too hot you will have problems, but thats very unlikely as they dont give out much heat atall...
The sides touch the reflective surface behind the mesh of the box; not really great for heat spreading.
It doesn't get used a great deal - it's a backup drive - only plugged in when required. It does get a bit warm during heavy use though... not ridiculous, but notably warm.
edit: I'm contemplating modding a fan into the unit - just a little 40mm thing to let the air move around a bit.
Why is it called an icy box if you have to mod it keep it cool?

Well you don't really, one side is taking the heat away pretty well, but I want it to be spot on, being the perfectionist that I am.
