Internet Routing system
I need to make a seriously small cheap Internet Routing system. The OS (smoothwall or IP-Cop) can run on 486's so it doesn't need to be a nice spec and the OS takes up like 200MB of space so i want everything to be super small, silent and cheap.
I've looked on kustom pc's and they seem to do a good load of SFF stuff. The cheapest smallest system i can make there is £285. Anyone else got any other ideas or know of anything cheaper?

Just buy a router? Smaller, cheaper, and quieter?

Nah 'cause i want a linux firewall and i know people with routers and it's too much hassle. I prefer an little routing box with the full OS on it

I used to use an old Compaq SFF box that I got from a computer fair for £50 , running smoothwall and an alcatel usb frog.
That said, I think you havn't been talking to the right people as far as routers go.
The Vigor Draytek 2600+ (£150 if you look in th eright places ) will walk over ( an unhacked ) smoothwall in terms of usability - especially with things like being able to host its own vpn's etc. configurability Smoothwall in its base form really doesn't offer that much.

If it'll run on a 486, why not get your self onto eBay or somewhere like AC Computer wearhouse and buy yourself a 133Mhz Pentium machine, then if you want it looking good, just strip out the insides and put them into a nice case ;)

Is it possible to install smoothwall onto a router?
Looks mean nothing to me.

My router has FreeBSD on it... I would never buy hardware to make my own linux/unix router, only use stuff I had lying around. It's not worth it otherwise.
