Socket 939 CPU's

Hey, I'm enquiring about a new PC im considering building, I want it to be 939 based, but the 3500 seems a little expensive atm, does any one know whether AMD will be manufacturing any *ahem* less expensive 939 chips?

The less expensive yet high performing AMD chips would be the Socket 754 chips.

939 pin cheaper amd processors:
athlon 64 3000+ coming Q4 2004
athlon 64 3200+ coming Q4 2004
sempron 3200+ coming Q1 2005
sempron 3500+ coming Q2 2005

a sempron is the new duron. they lack amd64 support.

këö¬t - I think the Sempron is actually the Athlon XP rebranded as it has 256cache, just another PR stunt to prolong their XP's life (as the chip is such a good one IMO).

The higher rating Semprons (3100 and above) are AMD64 chips without the 64 bit part and with less cache, available only on S754.

The lower rating S939 CPU's will be out later this year.

Is it worth going from a XP 2600+, to say, a A64 3000+?

I don't think its worth it but I have lingering thoughts in my mind about upgrading...

iMc, how do you judge whether it is worth it?
If you play games & are CPU rather than GPU limited then AMD64 will give you a significant jump.

An A64 3000+ Newcastle will happily overclock to ~2.4 on air (possibly up to 2.6 if lucky).
