    Help With New Design

    Building my mate a PC.

    He's got a 19" monitor already that's fine.

For £658 all from Dabs so far for starters
prices are rough I'm at work! From memory:

    WINDOWED CASE DABS VALUE £38
    ASUS P4P800 DELUXE £48
    P4 2.8GHZ £130
    512MB PC 3200 RAM £52
    80GB MAXTOR HARD DRIVE £60
    6800GT PNY £290
    DVD16X PLUS CDRW
    Any recommendations?
    DIFF M/B? etc

Try to stick at price reducing it wherever poss.

and please don't stick to Dabs.com!

re: "Well, can I recomend a change from the "ASUS P4P800 DELUXE"

THE best P4 (Northwood) board ever made is the v2 of the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe, so if I was recommending a mobo change, that would be it (or the non-Deluxe, non-E version of the P4C if he wanted to save a few pennies; or if money really is the issue, stick with what he has - the P4P800 is a decent enough board at a good price.) All in all, the ABIT or the ASUS will do (I should know, I've owned enough product from both of them over the years - oh my wallet!)

As regards the rest: get a 120/160GB drive. They are much larger and only cost a tiny bit more. And if I was going to spend dough on a PNY 6800GT (which I did!) I'd say that you want two sticks of 512 (for 1G total) in there running dual-channel. Games these days like RAM. Again, swap the CDRW for a DVD-RW, they are also dirt cheap, so not worth penny-pinching over.

I had a Asus delux... And a gigy 8knxp... now I have a ABIT IC7 MAX! They were the best of the best of each companys offer.... My abit gives me higher benchmarks then the rest, and it also overclocks the best as well. Also its rated the best P4 mobo by Maximum PC mag!

Theres nothing wrong with the p4p800 imo, and with a minor bios hack you can get PAT enabled and its just as quick as a canterwood board for less money.

    DVD16X PLUS CDRW ???
why, why not just get a dvdrw.
Can't really reccomend too many changes atm - but check out ebuyer - I usually find them a bit cheaper than dabs.

Ah, right. We have caps lock on at work too, but for forum posts it's a bit much.

How about going AMD that would save a bit of money.
Alternatively you could get AMD 64bit for the same kind of price as that p4 + mobo
