SSD in laptop, Laptop upgrade

I've got an ASUS X58L laptop, and it doenst get much use due to it being so slow. I want to give it to my grand mother as she needs something to read her emails on as her pc is just too old now (pushing 12 years). I am thinking of just spending around £90 on it and adding a stick of 2gb ram and a 120gb SSD. Would this be viable?

also am I able to just clone the current HDD to the SSD as I don't have a 32bit win vista basic cd for a fresh install.

The laptop currently takes 5 mins to start up and a minute to just open Firefox

would suggest a crucial or samsung drive myself for reliability

the sandisk one is cheap and this isn't sata3 so no need for top range ssd
however I would suggest getting one of the upgrade kits, esp the kingston ones, as they include both drive mirroring software and a 2.5" enclosure so you can turn the old hard drive into a portable drive.

Make sure to do a general clear up, delete out temporary files and download folder, they can quickly fill up and they can have a major effect of log on times as they are part of the user profile, the speed difference between a profile over 100mb vs under 20mb is very noticeable (also why I'm getting annoyed at so many bits of software now installing themselves into a user appdata folder instead of in programs files or all user appdata)

would just upgrading the RAM by adding 2 GB give the machine a significant enough boost?
The Laptop is just frustratingly slow (However, i do use my main PC which is ridiculously quick and boots up in 30 seconds so that could be one factor)

If i was to go to £100, and only buy an extra 1GB RAM so i hav ore to spend on the SSD, could i get an SSD kit for around £90?

The current HDD is 120GB, however I have noticed that not more than 50 GB of space is taken up.

Sweet idea man! Never thought of that. The only trouble is that you don't have much room for storage...
