HDD MP3 players?

Looking to buy a hdd based mp3 player (flash ones are not worth it when you condsider how small they are).

What ones are good? looking for one about 10-15gb for around £150.

Anyone heard of the e.digital treo 15gb player? Theres one in forsale for £100 but without power adaptor. I have basic electronics knowledge and could probably make one easy enough... but is this player good?

I remeber there was a thread about the ipods, in which someone pointed out several resons not to buy one.. I cant find that thread anymore, why are they bad?

I got my Rio Karma for 170 all in if that helps any.. (yes, fleabay..)

i'd get a rio karma - supports every single os, connects by usb2 or ethernet, plays lossless FLAC & high-quality Vorbis (as well as mp3, wma)

Wheres cheapest place for them?

How much would a rio karma be if I imported one from US? $299 is still less than £239 after import charges aint it?
According to xe.com $299 = £162.139, import charge wouldnt be £80 would it?

Its stupid how something in the US is cheap but so much more over here..

The carbon is still too expensive. I mean, its MORE over here than what the 15gb one costs in the US... pathetic really....

£170 was what I paid for mine including shipping, there are several peeps on ebay that will guarantee that the player arrives vat free, so it should about about the same amount :)

What about warrentys? only 90day in the us, maybe its worth the extra £70 to make sure it doesnt bork for another 270 days :E

Also I was reading that the rio's can be modded with laptop hdd's so I suppose all is not lost if it does b0rk, and then you can give it a 40gb one instead. anyone tryed this?

Hmm theres loads on there (I just looked) but everything, EVERYTHING on ebay looks dodgy, stuff imported from usa espcially.

Stoo if you could tell me the ID of the guy on eBay you got yours from and if it went smoothly etc that would be great.

Decided that I like gapless playback too much to get an iPod, even if I only have a few CDs which are continuous audio, it would ruin them if gaps were shoved in.

Gapless playback is really only a minor thing, and i'm glad its not there as it wld really piss me off tbh =)

annoy you? try... the prodigy, the fat of the land, the inteval between funky **** and serial thrilla. that requires gapless to not harm ears. or the interval between tracks 3 & 4 of the smashing pumpkins album adore. or pretty much every track on pink floyd echoes.

plus, it's only the latest generation ipods that can play large songs (> 32mb) without stopping at the 32mb mark for a rest

sorry, but whilst the ipod makes for a great fashion accessory, it's only a middling player for this "music" concept that some of us like

And at the end of the day, a music players main aim is to play music well. That means sounding good.

Maybe if Apple spent less time making the things look nice. I mean most people keep portable audio players in their pockets along with all the other crap they collect.

The Ipod does look good...to me anyhow... the Rio Karma is just u.g.l.y tbh but its all subjective :)

I was thinking is it worth getting a UK one for quite a bit more as it has 4x longer warrenty (1year, instead of 90 days...)..

Also ebay is evil.. just checking theres no better places to get one before its too late... :)

Yeah that's why I bought my Zen... Cos it has huge storage and sounds excellent.

And it may be bigger and slightly heavier than the Ipod but it's not overly big IMHO :)

My gen 2 ipod plays 80MB songs fine, never heard of that problem or experienced it.

It's a great product. But I agree about Creative.. They should have stuck to soundcards. That's what they were good at. Their Nomad MP3 players are excellent

Nah they just have a big marketing budget.. there cards arnt as good as the box would make you think...

From what ive read, the rio karma has EVERY feature you could ever want from a player... but I know nothing of the zen... know of any good reviews of it?

Their soundcards used to be the leading... And I've never had any problems...

Use Google to find a review. There's loads.

They (Creative) pretty much own the consumer sound card market.. If it weren't for the onboard sound chipsets anyway.

I guess what is putting me off Creative is that they had to buy off one of their most interesting ("Creative") competitors. Sure maybe it makes sense from a business point of view, but I can't help be think that had Aureal survived, we would've got more more advanced sound card due to competition (a la Intel vs AMD, Ati vs Nvidia).

That said, their speakers (Mega/Gigaworks series - less so for the Inspire) are very well regarded.

Does anyone here have a ihp-120? I see all this talk of zen and others but not of the best mp3 player of all times! :p

Their speakers (yeh with the exception of the Inspires) have always been very good.

the last good creative product i owned was a 3d blaster voodoo2. the soundblaster pci128 was abominable (a rebadged ensoniq soundscape, and lord knows ensoniq were retards), and their speakers just plain suck.

give me a nice not-creatiev produt any day of the week

Pcworld and dixons (the same group I know...) dont have the rio karma on there sites.. but they have the rio nitrus :(
Would they have it in store?
Anywhere else that sell them and have local-ish shops?

Fine! Ok so I own one! I found it to be better then my old Ipod, and the battery life is killer! I'm surprised no one else seems to be recomending it. After all it is preferd over the Rio.... And It suports more file types! Also it has a KILLER remote! :p The Fm is great to, and it also looks much better. The line in direct MP3 encoder is nice as well, I love hooking it up to a friends CD player and grabbing his music* ;) Not to mention its cheap! Well compared to the Ipod......



*Music of wich I already own! I am in no way confesing to copying CD's illegaly!

Hey all. my mum is going to florida in 2 weeks and she said she will get my a hard drive player.ipod karma etc etc. but now i need to pick one and tell her it so she can get it. i seen the rio carbon and it looked really nice only 5gb though.... so could u giuys give me links and ideas on to which ones u thinka re the best and tell me why. i will be lookign ymself as well but the etxra help would help make me make a gd decision.
