    athlon 64 temperature, what to believe

    Im all happy as i have stuck all me new fancy bits on my computer but i have one worry, the CPU temperature. I have a 64 3000+ and acording to the motherboard sensor it is running at 70 degree's at idle, i have a Themaltake venus 12 on top running at full speed and it seems fairly steady at this value. I also have a temperature probe attached to the bottom of the heatsink running to an aerogate 2 and this probe is reading a steady 40-45 degrees. So which do i believe and if the motherboard is telling the truth, why is the CPU running so hot??

    The mobo should be taking the reading from the CPU's internal diode, so that should be most accurate.

    What thermal compound did you use between CPU and heatsink?
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    From what I've been reading there are problems with false readings of cpu temperature with most Newcastle AMD 64bit CPUs (look on the Forum on the AMD web site). Depending on your motherboard you might be able to get a bios update which should sort it, if not one should be available soon.

    seems a little high tbh, you could alwasy have it at this temp, quickly, pwer off and take the heatsink off and touch it, 70 degress should be very warm, 40-45 shouldnt be that warm, or maybe thats a stupid suggestion

    I've read many people are having temperatures over 70 degrees, they updated the bios and now get between 45-50 degrees.

    I had a similar problem with a CG stepping 64 3200 (1MB) on an MSI K8N Neo, temps were between 55-65 C. Updated the BIOS and it seems to have solved the problem and temp is currently reading 39 C using Motherboard monitor 5.

    Mine is too low

    I have a AMD64 3500 on a GA-K8NSNXP-939 and I have the opposite. Says the temp is 14-16 deg. Only using the stock AMD heat sink. Tried the latest bios, and that made no difference.. Any ideas?

    faulty diode probably but if it is running that cold i wouldnt complain!! Could always try putting an external temperature probe on the heatsink connected to something like an aerogate 2 (as i have) to give you a bit more realistic reading.

    yeah aerogates arent too much plus you can monitor 4 other loactions and control 4 fans with them, only about 20-30 quid although you can get even cheaper temperature displays, i just like the aerogate as it is all flashy and shiny!

    My bro's 3200+ shows at 65C, IIRC it was showing lower (35-40) when I first set it up, and i have updated BIOS since then.
    I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.
