    Buying from the US

Ok, I'm after some new ram, 2x 512MB of pc4000, which is damned expensive in the Uk atm so I thought I'd check US prices. A quick check @ newegg - don't know why I had a look at them but they were alot cheaper than the UK.

    Geil Ultra Series Dual Channel 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-4000 - Retail $278 (approx £158 - according to xe.com)

OCZ Performance Series Dual Channel Kit 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-4200- Retail $286 (approx. £163)

Which one of those two is better? personally I'm leaning towards the Geil - it's cas2.5 and the OCZ is cas3, so the Geil would probably do the same speed as the OCZ @ cas3 ..... I don't think theres much in it tbh.
Is there anywhere else I should check or are newegg about the cheapest/best ?
Oh and they'll be sent to my sister (who lives over there) for her to forward on to me as a gift

Thats what you think, the only reason Customs have managed to get hot on this is they bought an xray machine, you would be amazed how well a memory simm shows up lol

If Customs do intercept it, expect the price you paid in dollars to be the same as you'll end up paying in pounds. From experience

Newegg is a pretty solid outfit. Good choice. Some other US sellers can be a nitemare.

Here's a site that shows feedback from just about any net pc retailer.

It will as long as the goods coming out of the U and back to the UK are accompanied by the original AGR (American Goods Return form). Put the problem is you very rarely get the chance to send the goods tot he US with these because the items you are returning have to have been made in the US and very rarely are electronics actually made in the US.

Duty is becoming more and more unavoidable.

Well, even if you add 22.5% it still works out cheaper than the UK, sub £200 for a gig of quality RAM, haven't seen that over here recently - so nothing to lose really.

Which do you reckons better - I'm leaning towards the Geil - as its cas2.5

    Memory 278$
    Shipping 20$
    Subtotal 298$
    +22.5% 67$
    Total 365$ at xe.com conversion rates £208.67

    The same Geil Ram at www.overclockers.co.uk £193.88 + Shipping @ £3.48

Personally I do not see how thats cheaper in the US and its also a damn site cheaper to send back if theres an RMA issue......

The US dont really have an edge over the UK in computer parts, to get that you need to buy from as close to the source as possible - take a trip to Hong Kong or South Korea!

I agree with M@ttz, have a fish round the UK suppliers, you are bound to find something suitable. In additon you will have the benefits of UK support and RMA service.

Ok - I'm convinced - its not really worth the hassle of getting it from the US ......

Time to speak to the brother in law in Brunei - see what he can do

Cheers for the gladiator mention - £10 cheaper than komplett

sorry if i broke the rules there guys, was simply trying to illustrate that 1Gb for under £190 is available in the UK, that buying from USA is not required.

The product I stated was Corsair TwinX 512MB x 2 PC4000 (edited along with the price for some reason), I am sure you will find many prices online so I have no need to type ours.

Memory prices have leveled off a little in the last few week but you know the market can go up and down, it tends to be the specialist stuff that gets hit first.
