Mechanical keyboard for a beginner
I have been hearing and reading a lot about mechanical keyboards lately and all of it is that they are brilliant.
I use my PC a lot at the moment and most of the time I am typing something or gaming. With that in mind I'd quite like to get in on the action and get a mechanical keyboard.
However, I don't know that much about them. I have vague knowledge of the cherry MX switches but that is about it.
What do you think is good for a beginner if spending around £70? I don't really have a preference on layout or what switches, I'd just like to know what to look at and get some suggestions.
Thanks!
Re: Mechanical keyboard for a beginner
Well, honestly its all about switches, if you can go to a pc shop and try out different keyboards with different switches, and decide from there, perfect. Although if you cant do that, then research about switches, http://www.overclock.net/t/491752/me...keyboard-guide there's a very good guide on the different type of switches, their features and what might suit your preferences. I personally have a Corsair K90 with red mechanical key switches, they are great, the only problem I have with them is that they are really easy to trigger (that's also the feature of the reds), at first, i fumbled a lot and hit multiple keys near the key i wanted to hit, but over time, i become more precise and pressing and it absolutely amazing. After you decide on a key switch, come back, and we can recommend a keyboard to you.
Re: Mechanical keyboard for a beginner
Personally i own a cherry blue and they are a joy to type. For gaming, they are ok but really if you want a gaming keyboard, go for red or browns. Bare in mind, the blues are super loud but i love their clicky noise.
Re: Mechanical keyboard for a beginner
I'd definitely be looking at the Corsair Vengeance range at your budget, there isn't many better options.
Re: Mechanical keyboard for a beginner
You can go into a PC World store and see some of the Corsair keyboards on display, the better branches should have these set up for you to tap on the keys and see how they feel. If you take a laptop in you might even be able to connect the display model to the laptop and try typing on them, but that's probably pushing things unless you get there at a quiet time and find someone that's ultra helpful or trying to get out of doing some 'real' work.

Are Mechanical Keyboards worth the money I am another one who has never had the opportunity of trying one, maybe I might get the chance to see if they have one in the local PC World but I would never buy at there prices they seem to be £10 above everyone else. I do play online games and have to hit my keyboard a couple of times to make it respond.
But £90 for a Corsair Keyboard.

Personally I really think so, I use one membrane keyboard and one mechanical, with cherry browns. Gaming and typing is much more pleasant with the mechanical, but at the cost of money and noise !
Definitely subjective though - so I'd go and try before you vote with your credit card :)

I have a Filco Majestouch-2, Tenkeyless with cherry blue switches which I find absolutely great for typing and fine for gaming but I think most people would prefer a stiffer key action for gaming.

I have the Same keyboard, but with browns, the blue is the stiffest -and noisiest !! Of the Cherrys, and would not be my personal choice. I would go for red or brown. So this just highlights personal preference and the need to try one out. PC world is your best bet, they should have at least something with mech keys so you can see if you like the style :)
In a nutshell the keys go Black, Blue, Clear, Brown, Red in order of stiffness - but they also vary in their feedback/actuation point.
Hope this helps :)

Honestly, if you have the extra money to spend on a mechanical keyboard then get it. It will dramaticly change your typing experiences and will last you much longer than those rubber domes keyboards
