How hot have you got your cpu without it exploding?

All this talk of processor temperatures got me thinking. A while back one of the CPU fans on my work machine blew, it has twin P3 1 GHZ and i usually kick the ass out of the thing (running fairly beefy engineering software). Obviously i didnt know the fan had gone until the machine rebooted at which point i looked in the BIOS and found that the processor was running at 95 degrees!! Still i stuck a new fan on and it all worked fine and still does to this day.

So how hot have you got your CPU without it blowing up?

I got my XP2500 to 90oC, heatsink but forgot to plug the fan in, almost seemed like a good idea to touch the heatsink as well at the time

I've seen screen caps of the old Via Hardware Monitor software claiming a temperature of 100C for a Spitfire Duron. Since that's likely to be a socket temp, god knows what the actual processor temp was, and at that point it was still running windows!.

I was building my new mahcine and i had a soltek mobo in an old case with a duron in the slot with out a heat sink or fan, without realising i plugged in my cold cathodes to test them and for about 5 mins i left it and this duron was smoking alittle.......stupid me.

Does my mates southbridge catching fire count?

Went round a friends house, and there was this fishy smell of burning - rebooted his Athlon 1.4 frying machine, and the BIOS wouldn't display the temp at all...tried to display 3 digits (+100 degrees C).....fixed it all, and the chip was fine for another 4 months till his psu blew and took out the mobo, gfx card, hdd's and modem!

BTW he's a notorious cheapskate, and the psu cost him £4 from a crappy pc show....surprised it actually lasted as long as it did!

My old 1.4 Tbird use to run at 72c full load with the stock heat sink on, never crashed once due to heat problems that I know of and the chips still going fine now.

I once smelt hot metal while overclocking an old K6. The PC was crashing so I had a look inside to find the CPU fan wasn't plugged in. I thought it would be clever to take the CPU out to look at it - it was about a gzillionºC and burnt my hand when I picked it up.

It's still running perfectly now - currently serving as my gateway.

Didn't they do it with the original P4 as a demonstration of its thermal throttling??
