Just got an A64 3500+ for £199+VAT from Microdirect, so they're a tiny bit less than you've said.

I have just stuck a 3000+ it is (as far as i can tell from reading lots of reviews) the best bang for your buck, you can also stick .45 GHz on it bringing it up to 3400-3500 speeds

Not true, with the X800Pro the cpu (xp3000) is gonna be the main bottleneck in the system, which wont be the case if he upgrades to A64.

I would personally recommend going S939 for future compatibility. The S754 which did have better performance (Clawhammer cores) are getting harder to find these days, so might as well spend a little extra and get dual channel capability.

Me I'm looking at a Dual CPU config and Yeah that means getting 2 Opterons(244-1.8Ghz each) and a 940 chipset type motherboard, Like the MSI K8T Master2-FAR and some PC3200 LL registered ram(512Mb) from either Corsair or OCZ and a couple of P4 heatsinks, Power Cable adapters(20pin(2x10) to 24pin(2x12) and a 1x4(2x4) in adapter, This motherboard uses of course the 4pin(2x2) 12vdc cable. And a new case(Silverstone Temjin 5 (SST-TJ05-B) - Black Computer Tower PC Case- Accept EXTENDED (12"x13") size ATX M/B), a 470w Enermax psu, a DVD+R drive and a 6800 series 128Mb(or greater) agp video card.
