    Project Beastiality

Me and my mate have begun ordering the parts for our 3d mark chart challenger.

Today we set out and spent £2300 in the form of:

    Lian Li PC-75 Windowed
    Enermax 550W PSU
    4 x Sanyo Denki 80mm case fans
    1 x Lian Li 5.25 bezel
1 x Lian Li Floppy bezel

    P4C800 Deluxe-E Motherboard
    P4 3.2C 800mhz
    Sapphire R9800pro 256mb
    2 x 512mb OCZ EL-DDR Twin Modules

    2 x 160gb Maxtor SATA 7200rpm 150sata 8mb cache
    Samsung 52x/24x/52x/16x DVD/CD ROM Combo
    Floppy Drive

    Soundblaster Audigy2

    Intellimouse Explorer 3
    Coolermaster Alloy Keyboard
Everglide Clear Mouse Mat (these suck btw stay clear)
16 x Tweakmonster Ram sinks (for gfx card)

    Windows XP Pro

Still to order the extreme cooling which is looking like two prommies atm.

What you think, do we have a shot?

are you going to run the hard drives in raid? (not that it should really have much effect on 3dmark)...

3d mark loads everything into RAM and VRAM before execution. So, HDD speed will only make a diference if your RAM/VRAM is in limited supply. And, here it aint.

Id have ordered 1 120gbDrive, and put the rest towards more/better ram (if exists?).

Just my 2p's, and good luck!

3d mark isn't suppose to rely on hard drive performance at all, it loads the tests before they are run, having said that, it can sometimes have a slight difference.

you might like to see how cool you memory chips are before you stick ram sinks on them because if they are colder than ambient, then the sinks will just serve to heat them up. phase change cooling of the gpu cools them down below ambient when the graphics card isn't in use, but i'm not sure what temp they'll be at when running overclocked.

also, what version of 3dmark are you trying to compete in? many of the 2001 top scores are achieved by radeon 9800pro's but look at 2003 and you'll see that fx5900's dominate, also in 2003 you don't necessarily need the fastest cpu to compete, macci, #2 in 2003 (and #1 in 2001), is using an aircooled 2.4C, but then a fast graphics card is essential, a la, an r404 cooled fx5900 http://www.solidhardware.com/macci/5...6closeup_1.jpg. you'll find that many of the top results use r404 refrigerant, which with a prometia means swapping the stock refrigerant with r404, there are various guides on how to do this, but is supposedly not too hard but can risk damaging the compressor.

also what memory are you planning on using? despite manufacturers claims you'll find all the best results use low latency timings over the fastest mhz speeds.

lol, Cooler Master for me too but they don't have anything the size of a pc-7x, and space could well be handy in his system! aesthetics are going to gou out the window by having 2 prommies though, side panel will have to be taken off, g-clamps installed, all kinds of fun and games!

K, reply to top post, i dont think there is better memory than OCZ 3500 Twin sticks, corsair etc are equal but nothing better.

Was planning on using Prometeia on both cpu and gfx, still looking for someone to assist me in getting one on a r9800 gpu.
Chose the Lian Li because its simply the biggest case going and i dont think coolermaster have anything near the size of it.

I am aware its sex with animals but its not in this case :->

i read that anything more than a 56w TEC to cool a gfx card and itll ice up, and snap, so it might not be a good idea, dunno why its any different for cpu but maybe gfx just doesnt give out enuf heat... and tbh u get better performace from higher mem clocks than higher core clocks, so maybe watercooling would be better for u so u could get the gfx mem, nb (for high fsb) and ur hdd's so u can wrap niose dampening foam around them.

also iirc the Sapphire R9800pro 256mb version uses DDRII mem, which because its soooo new clocks alot worse than DDRI mem, so u might also want to rethink that aswell, any performace u could gain from the extra mem ul lose as soon as u clock it.

The r9800 pros dont clock much full stop.

BUT the sapphire 256mb version has +20mhz clock and mem, my aim is to get 400 mem (overclock of 50mhz) and with vapochill on gpu about 500 clock (overclock of 120mhz) Im not worried about the gpu going to 500mhz, and im sure i can get 50mhz out of the memory ddr-II or not, theres always a way ;-)

most of the top 3dmarkers (where they are using 9800pro's) are using the 128mb version, and the top scores are achieved with 560+mhz on the gpu.

500mhz shouldn't be too tough with a vapo tbh, mine hits 460+mhz on air.
