Recommend a socke...

i'll be building a considerably high-end spec pc for my brother and was wondering if someone could recommend me a socket 754 motherboard and a the best air cooler for the cpu that money can buy, the budget is pretty much bottemless.

for the motherboard, £80 - £160 is reasonable and the only part that i will be over clocking is the cpu so what would be the best and most effective air cooler that money can buy??

Errr...why 754 and not 939? If the budget's bottomless, I mean - OK, you can get a 1MB cache 754, but I wouldn't trade that for the dual-channel memory w/S939.

The new DFI 754 should be the best overclocker going by the beta board that have been being tested. the press release is out so expect boards in retail within a couple of weeks.
As for hsf Thermalright SLK-948U or XP-120.

If budget is bottomless why not go socket 939 though?

but i've been looking at benchmarks and the 754s perform about 11% better at game for example in farcry... windows duties aren't important...

depends what processor you have & whether it has 1Mb cache or 512Kb.
Remember that 3700+ looks like being the top of the socket 754 tree - after that no upgrade.
& if the budget is bottomless you can have an FX-53

Also I've heard rumours that AMD will soon release a 3600 S939 chip @ 2.2GHz w/ 1mb cache- essentially a socket 939 FX51.

if cost isnt a big concern 939 easily makes the most sense. of course you could go 754 3700+ and spend that little extra on video card etc.

754, i heard the epox 8kda3j is very good..

and best air cooler would be the thermaltake ones, forgot the exact model name though..

could always get water cooling if there is no limit to the money

but yeah go for the newer socket if u can afford it ..
