My biggest concern with on-board RAID is that it probably will tie you down to having to use that motherboard. What if it dies? You might need an exact same model with the same on-board controller to be able to read your data.
At least with a card, it can move from system to system if required.
Out of interest, which motherboard? The M4A87TD? You'd be then forced to stick with the SB850 chipset.
