HDD silencers, any good?

In my neverending quest to get my PC to STFU while still actually running, I came across these:

too likely to overheat the drive causing death or premature aging. id suggest to quiten your hd simply sell it and buy something like a seagate, they give 5 years as standard now too!

that one is actually pretty good as it suspends the drive. stay away from other full housing as Reaper says they heat up the drive. or go for a seagate barracuda or spinpoint for quietness

why not do it yourself all you need is a bit of knicker elastic to suspend the drive.

Well, I just lost two drives for unknown reasons, so I am more likely to buy a HD cooler (adding noise because of more fans) than a HD silencer

Actually, I already ordered a Vantec HD cooler (black to go with my Black Widow) for a Raptor I ordered as a replacement and a fan you place underneath HD to circulate air for my "to be RMAed" HD. I'll also be keeping an eye on CMs Cooldrive 6 once it comes out as well (provided it comes in black ). With the added Raptor, I will be running 3 HDs (though I may sell one off). Having lost 200GB of data over two drives in 10 days (no not RAIDed, two different HD on two different machines!) I will not be taking any chances in the future!

i have 2 HDs, a Maxtor DiamondMAX+9 (as secondary) and the primary is some sort of Samsung HDD, both 120Gb w/8Mb cache. The Samsung seems to make no access noise at all so I guess the mechanisms are pretty quiet already, the Maxtor makes very little access noise, but that's not really what I want to silence.

I have an aluminium case which (I'm told) will resonate with the spin vibrations of the drive. What I want is to insulate the drives from direct contact with the case, hence the item in the link above. Surely that wont affect heat dissipation much given it's only a couple of rubber bands round the drive? I think i'll contact the store and see if they'll let me buy a couple of these on the understanding that if I'm not happy with the noise reduction I can return them for a refund...

i have one of those... didn't pay that much for one though

and seemed to help a lot on my old harddrives to reduce vibrations which was what most of the sound was coming from on my harddrive...and doesn't cause any overheating at all.... as none of the vents are blocked or anmything

Id suggest using an akasa hdd cooler - which comprises of two 40mm fans - 7vmodded for silence.
this will keep the drives cool and allow you to suspend them properly. If you just suspend them then they will probably get too hot - my maxtors did.
