    Question Thermalright XP-120

Was thinking of getting one of these as I need a better(and quieter) cooler than the stock HSF I have. Only prob is I have an AMD 64 3000+ and product description says it can be used on socket 754 but says 3200+ and upward.

Any idea if I can use this on the 3000+. I especially would like the ability to use a 120mm fan to quieten my pc down.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

yes you can use it, the rating 3200+ is some form of rating of the maximum processor speed you should use with it, anything with less power consumption than that, such as a 3000+, will be fine.

No not all are the same, I'd look for one with an rpm rating of near 2200rpm or less, They should be quiet enough. Sunon is a good brand and so is Enermax or Vantec, Both Enermax and Vantec offer variable speed fans in a 120mm size, See the images of the Enermax and the Vantec below:

Me I like the 120x120x38mm fans, But they spin faster and cool better, But that's cause They move more air.

    Air Flow(max): 63.05CFM - 94.92CFM
    Noise: 24.60dB - 30.10dB

    Airflow: 54.3 - 92 CFM
    Noise Level: 29 - 39 dB(A)

And I've used Vantec fans, I have 2-92mm that run 24/7, So I'd trust Vantec.

what's the minimum cfm I should look for in a fan that's going to be on top of my heatsink and cool my processor. I have seen an silenx fan from kustompc which is only 14dba but only has 58cfm.

find out how much noise you can tolerate for your PC use (eg is it on in a bedroom, is it on 24/7) and someone will be able to recomend a fan for you. if you have a fan controller you can probably buy a reasonably power fan and running it at lower volts when not in use.

pc is in my bedroom so I want it as quiet as poss but want to keep cpu temp below 50c(I am using stock hsf and cooler at the moment and av cpu temp is 50c)

30cfm is plenty if your using a good heatsink. Dunno how good that heatsink is, but a slk800 + 30cfm can cool a 1700+ at 1.9v/2300mhz and keep it below 50°c. Thats about 90w, and a ~20°c dT. Thats a guess C/W of 0.22.
Note that these are close guesses. I have no idea atm what my cpu temp is.. but I know it has been run at those settings before, and under load given those temps.
Work out the wattage of your cpu (should be in the amd/intel tech docs...)
and then find the C/W rating of the heatsink+fan. If the heatsink doesnt come with a fan then the box probably wont say this - not that you can always trust a manuf. ratings anyway... so find a decent review of the heatsink in question - Any decent review should give a C/W rating, for the particular fan they are using. If they dont, then its a review thats not worth reading.
