    Looking at going AMD64

So what processor and mobo would be a good combo along with which ram to get for it ?

3500+ on socket 939 with some of that new crucial ballistix 3200 sounds like a good starting point

Scan's listing it at just shy of £240 at the moment, you could go with socket 754, but then you're really limiting yourself in terms of upgrade ability further down the line.

240 for a cpu is way over what i think is sensible to pay.

You could go down the Socket 754 route, would be much cheaper and there are a fair few decent boards around for them.
Only thing is you would have to change CPU and mobo next time you upgrade

Its up to you, Socket 754 is much cheaper though.

yeah, but it's going to cost the amount moving to 939 would for the next upgrade anyway.. like the other thread asking about A64, you might as well wait for the 939 price to drop (I'm sure you can wait a couple of months), and by then there should be a better choice for motherboards too

but lets be realistic here even if he only gets an a643200+ (skt 754), a good mobo and some nice ram what is he gonna need to upgrade too within the next 3 yrs ?

im guessin the is no real need to go the 939 route as he isnt lookin for an uberperformer and would be content with just a capable pc

too which id suggest an a64 3200+, epox 8kda3j or +, and a gb of second hand pc 3500 ram. And just do a bit of overclocking

were all gonna be upgraded again within 2 years neway !

maybe u could even wait for the new lanparty board to see what thats like

Tis true, if your looking at A64, wait for the price to drop, that would be the best option as you have a clear upgrade path in the future and as Stoo said, wait a couple of months and the price will be just right

Yeah, but if in those 3 years you want to upgrade to a high end graphics card (does anyone really think they could last with 3 year old tech with the current speed of graphics development?), or install more ram you're going to have to change everything just the be able to change over, which really isn't cost effective..

Personally my vote goes for a cheap Skt 754 system, theres life left in it yet, and if you get a 3200+ CPU now http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?s...2-0000D52EA46E for £140 you still have the option to upgrade to a 3700+ later on down the line, and in a year or so they will be cheap as chips.

Add to that a DFI lanparty Ultra-D available in the next couple of weeks for £100 or so and you have a system that will last a couple of years at least, especially when overclocked.

I'm personally no t upgrading to Skt 939 until PCI express is well established, the process matured, and the next gen of processors are released.

And for RAM, the aforementioned Crucial Ballistix PC3200 is a winner http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/Part...64Z402&cat=RAM

The difference in performance at the moment between Skt 754 and Skt 939 is minimal, despite the Skt 754 being single-channel the memory controller in the A64 is still lightining-fast and you will see no noticeable gains between a 2.5Ghz 754 and a 2.5Ghz 939 except in benchies. Go for the cheap and effective option now, worry about upgrading again in a year or two when you can get a lot more muscle for your money on Skt 939, and Nforce4 chipsets will be out. Just my opinion.

I'm looking at doing this at the moment & basically it has narrowed down to "do I get a cheap 754 board (Chaintech VNF3-250 £56 looking good at the moment), 3000+ £115 & overclock to 2.4GHz or get a Socket 939 & 3500+ for its future upgradeability?"

As I've got a couple of rigs I suspect I'm going to do both!
Upgrade 1 to a cheap 754 now (just wait to see if AMD responds to this weeks Intel price cuts) & then when the nForce4 & PCI-E boards show up upgrade another to 939 in the New Year.
