    Simple question

    Simple question for you lot....

At the moment I am probably going to hold off buying one of the new generation gfx cards, wait until next year, then go socket 939 with pci-express, etc.

I'm trying to estimate how much I need to save (I know prices will change, etc), and a lot of this depends on how many of my existing parts I can use. I've only just bought a new HDD sooooo the question is: Can you get a SATA to EIDE adapter, or something similar? I'm not fussed about SATA at the moment, I would rather get an adapter and then change my hard drives later when I can afford it.

Also, I've seen that normal DDR (albeit the 3200 stuff) can be used with some Athlon 64 boards; is that right? I have a stick of TwinMOS 3200 that may migrate, helping the cost. In time I'll replace everything, but for the momen my priority is getting the new board, processor, and gfx card. That in itself should cost me plenty

Depends on the Graphics card and proccessor really.
    I'd guesstimate £300 for a 3800+ and motherboard.
Thats my guesstimation anyway, doubt it will be right, these fickle prices.

By next year we will already have new gards on the market though, 7800 ultra (that was a joke btw )

Yeah but answer my question can you get a SATA to EIDE adapter so I can use my current IDE drives? And will some 939 boards take normal DDR 3200?

I think that all the Socket 939 boards take standard DDR RAM, its only Socket 940 that needs a different type of RAM.

But what about DDR2? will they take standard DDR and DDR2 (when it improves)?

I've got two or three of the ABIT Serillel converters to do this job lying around, drop me a PM if you're interested in one.

It isn't the socket 939 that requires DDR2 RAM, it is PCI-Ex16 - also PCI-Ex1 I think - motherboards that require it, so without going into too much detail, you will need new RAM if you purchase the things you are thinking of getting.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
