    overclocking an athlon 64 setup...

    Hi,

    was just wondering how you wouldgo about overclockin an athlon 64 setup as i heard they are quite different.

    as you keep upping the FSB as normal but you can force the memory to run at a lower speed ?

    and you can adjust the HT frequency aswell ?

    oh and what voltages are safe for the athlon 64's, same as the xp's ?

    Yes you just up the FSB , the CPUs are multiplier locked upwards so you can only decrease the multiplier. On my mobo you can run the memory with 3 different dividers and also the HTT has 3 different divisors. Basic voltage is 1.5 so you can certainly go up to 1.7v safely. You need a mobo with a pci/agp lock to do any serious overclocking.

    so what do you do about the memory and HTT dividers as that bit i'm confused on...

    It seems to work like this on my VIA chipset.

    Memory speed = (New FSB / Base FSB) x Speed memory set in BIOS

    For 230 FSB with memory set to 200 in BIOS. 230/200 x 200 = 230 MHZ

    For 230 FSB with memory set to 166 in BIOS. 230/200 x 166 = 191 MHZ

    For 230 FSB with memory set to 133 in BIOS. 230/200 * 133 = 153 MHZ
    The default FSB is 200 MHZ

    Their are 3 speeds you can set the memory to run to in the BIOS - 200 , 166 or 133 MHz

    The HTT works in a similar way but the speed of the HTT has very little effect on performance
