Stick to Windows 7 for now while you test to see if it is the GPU. The driver issue with Win 8 and Nvidia is because most people install the display driver straight away, 306 being the recommended WHQL ones, and Windows 8 itself installs some 304 variant. Once you reboot Windows doesn't know which driver to load and hence the grey screen/non-boot.

    Re: GPU gone?

    Update:

Took out my 480gtx gpu and added my 260gtx and guess what, win 7 booted fine fully with the proper nvidia drivers. i then reinstalled win 8 and it all went fine as well.

i am going to test the 480gtx once more on my rig just to make sure that maybe i did not seat it properly or something and if all fails we can safely say the gpu is screwed

Not looking promising. Gutted for you mate. Strange way for it to go, never seen one do it like that before. Is it not in warranty or have you voided it with the WC?

I know they're fine with W/C but you're probably out in the cold if you don't have the shroud.

    Re: GPU gone?

From my reading of this http://eu.evga.com/support/warranty/ , it looks having put a waterblock on doesn't void it, but it needs to be returned with the factory cooler on. There's another bit mentioning a surcharge for removing/repairing modifications; might be worth shooting them an email/posting to their forums once you're sure it's dead, explaining that you don't have the original cooler etc(I'm guessing a replacement EVGA cooler is going to be to hard to find), see if they accept the RMA with a surcharge, even if they charge you a steep rate(which I'd expect tbh) for replacing the cooler, got to be a lot cheaper than a whole new card.

You'll want to go over it with a fine tooth comb(Block off, magnification+good light), to make sure it's not water damage too, because they will and if they find any you'll get nowhere.

I've dealt with them a couple of times, always good. They will follow the posted agreement to the letter, with very little wiggle room, but it's one of the fairest tbh and it looks like you might be able to get an RMA without the cooler according to it.

Best of luck and my condolences to your wallet either way.

    Re: GPU gone?

Ok done. sent them an email basically saying how when i changed hdd and tried to re install win 8 i started having issues. also said i have my gpu water cooled for over a year without an issue.

I did not get into detail of me flushing my loop though but stated how its water cooled and if me not having stock cooler voids the warranty. we'll see what they say

    Re: GPU gone?

Well, given that you don't have trouble with your GTX260 it's certainly a possibility. Frankly, at the point it's pretty much worth checking anything

I seem to remember a similar problem afflicting some of the earlier AMD cards that supported bitstreaming over HDMI too. Bit of a PITA, but if that does turn out to be it, at least it's relatively easy to resolve.
