    GPU gone?

    Hi all.

A few days ago i decided to flush my water cooling loop as it has been over 12months since initially installed it.

After i drained it, took it apart and cleaned out the block, i then reinstalled it all together and added new coolent. I then did a 24 hour leak test over the weekend and all was well, no leaks whatsoever.

My next step was to hook up all the cables and then turn on the system. I turned it on and booted onto my windows 8 usb stick and installed windows 8. Take a look at the issue on my youtube video. You can skip and watch the last 20seconds of the video.

I then tried to reinstall windows 7 thinking its a win8 issue and i managed to install win 7 and got as far as going into desktop installing a few apps and installing the nvidia drivers. After installing the nvidia drivers it asks me to restart so i did. When i restarted it never loaded windows 7 and always got a blank screen.

Is my GPU ****ed? CPU maybe? mobo? PSU? My guess it is the GPU which now forces me to cough up £300

Any suggestions on what i can try to fix the GPU? or to do more tests to determin that it is the gpu?

    Thanks in advance

    System specs:

    i7 920 cpu
    Nvidia 480gtx(dead?)
    corsair 850W Gold PSU
    crucial M4 SSD 128gb

    3 1TB SATA hdd's

    Water cooling loop
    XSPC reserviour in bay
    ex-ddc pump
    EK supreme HF cpu block
    EK 480gtx plexi waterblock

    Issue
I will let the video do the talking.

    Re: GPU gone?

Why do you think it's GPU? Looks like the display is fine.

    Re: GPU gone?

Don't think it's hardware, if you GPU was water damaged you wouldn't be getting as far as you are, you probably wouldn't even get a POST screen. My best guess is would be a windows install/driver issue of some kind.

Can you get into safe mode? If so scrub your GPU drivers and try installing a different version, simply because that was the last thing you did before the problem appeared. Hard to tell what the problem is from the video, seems like it's restarting fine when the video stops or is it just a looping restart?

Because that error message that displays briefly mentions video and when i tried to install win 7, as soon as i installed the nvidia drivers, it screwed up the OS . couldnt boot past the windows 7 logo as it just appears with a blank screen

I can install different drivers only when i install win 7, windows 8 doesnt give me the ability to do so as you can see from my video

    Re: GPU gone?

If it were me, my next step would be to completely re-install 7, with minimal hardware connected, CPU, GPU, 1 stick RAM and only the bootdisk. Reseating the GPU while you're in there and double checking the power connectors.

Don't move onto installing anything else(inc drivers) until the install is 100% complete just let it keep using the default VGA driver until you're wholly done with the windows install and have successfully rebooted a couple of times. Then try a different driver, if you're using the latest, drop a couple of versions. If not use the latest. Forget windows 8 for now, use 7 to diagnose the problem.

An alternative would be something like a bootable XP image and using that to test your GPU.

    It's the drivers if you're using 310.33.

No guarantees obviously, but with what you've described and terb has said it whiffs very strongly of a driver problem. WHQL seem to have an incredible ability to pick the single worst driver possible in my experience.

Not 310.33 (probably 306.67), but i was greeted with a grey screen after installing them on 8 and it's a known problem.

    Re: GPU gone?

Hi All i tried to reinstall 4 different nvidia drivers and it did not work so we can scratch that being a driver issue.

i then did a memory test using mmtest and it passed fine.

The next thing i did was to drain my loop again and take out my gpu.

i observed the GPU and there was no single damage marks or anything on it or around the pci e contacts.

i then checked the pci e lane for any visible dusts and again looks clean but just to make sure i used air can spray to spray any unvisible stuff that may be inside there.

I now hooked up the loop back up and refilled it but this time without the gpu installed. i will now take out my 260gtx tonight from my htpc and dump it inside my main rig and see how it goes.

if it installs the drivers or win 8 well, i will then test and play a game or two for 30mins or so just to make sure and if all passes fine, The next step is to then reinstall the gpu loop, see if it works now and if it doesnt we can conclude that the 480gtx is screwed.

it is a bit tricky testing my 480gtx on my htpc because it has a waterblock.

    Re: GPU gone?

Sounds like the best course of action. Sometimes big cards can be a bit finicky about seating, that would be my last best guess other than dead card then.

    Re: GPU gone?

Yea before plunging out on a new gpu(im broke as it is and really dont want to spend on a gpu) i want to make absolute sure its the gpu thats messed up.

i dont want to get a new gpu until the new 780gtx's comes out

    Re: GPU gone?

At this point if you do need a new GPU, I'd be mindful of Christmas/January sales too, rather than taking the plunge right away.
