    Boot disk's... don't boot :/

Trying to help a friend out atm.

he has a dual-boot setup with XP and 98SE.
he likes to delete random files....

XP now boots as far as scandisk, then reboots
    98SE will load fine

I was going to try a repair or re-installation of XP as he has over 100gig of files that are very important to him.... you can guess what.....

When using a bootable CD,and making sure the BIOS bootlist is set to look at CDROM 1st, his computer ignores it and continues to load from IDE-0

When booting from XP boot disk's (made on my working machine and within his 98SE with the tool from microsoft.com) the boot works until the end of all 6 (yes six!!) disk's have loaded then we are shown a BSOD :/

Has anyone heard or come across this before??
    Any suggestions?

    C:\ (98SE)
    D:\ (XP & 100gig of "files")
    E:\ (Other storage)

    F:\ LiteOn CDRW
    G:\ DVD-ROM

Copy the contents of the XP CD to a FAT(32) partition and boot from a floppy. Run winnt.exe (/i386 folder?) from there to setup and repair.

    Roker.

Have you tried totaly taking out all references to any boot device but the CDROM, and also enable "enable other boot devices".
Also, if its not a legit CD, the chances are it wont boot because of the boot sector not being there.

    Hey acidrainy

Agent is right, particularly if it's an oldish mobo, the chances are it will be overly choosy and not boot from a cd.

depending on the bios, make sure you only have boot from cd selected and try the cd in both drives.

May be a silly question, but the liteon and dvd drive can both read the cd from win98 ? I know liteon will read just about anything, as do most dvd drives, so sorry for the silly suggestion
