DLNA receiver

My Sony bravia offers sod all support for DLNA, which is frustrating because it seems like a brilliant idea.... Wirelessly streaming video to my TV without having to use HDMI (my HDMI doesn't work due to mysterious motherboard/software mishaps).

Now my laptop does do the job, with my tv connected to my router my laptop allows me to 'play to' ' and select my TV, but due to it supporting so few files I can't play much.

Can anyone recommend a standalone DLNA receiver I can beam files to, and for it to then display on my TV via HDMI?

With all the sales on at the moment, your cheapest option might actually be a DLNA compatible blu-ray player, like this one, for example:

At least with the latter option, you get a free blu-ray player into the bargain

A friend bought what I'm pretty sure was a Yamaha receiver, at about the £600 mark.

I remember him teling me he was playing with his tablet, and one of the video options said "play on TV" (or words to that effect), and he thought .... wonder what that does, so he clicked it.

He was then astonished to see his AV receiver turn on, select the TV, power up the TV, and play a video file stored on a PC server. His tablet was basically a fancy AV. remote control. And that is the way of the future .... ease, convenience and inter-operability.

have you tried windows media center and a xbox 360?

it works pretty well but one device ( mine is the pc ) must be connected via cable to the router to ensure HD playback.

plays most files but I find reconverting mkv files to mp4 makes the files more smoother. installing the shark codecs help as well.

there is also an app called media browse that makes file browsing a lot better.

might be a cheap option.
