    Laptop HDMi very flaky

    Hi guys,

I am really not having a great month with laptops. First I have the motherboard replaced on this laptop due to HDMI output problems (wasnt outputting anything) then my back up laptop packs up and now my good laptop (with new motherboards) decides to go all flaky in the HDMi sense.

This is the first time I have tried the HDMI output since the new motherboard was fitted. On one TV it doesn't work at all. I just cant get any signal to the TV. My main TV down stairs upon first plugging in & turning on it works but it either turns off again after 30seconds, or it stays on but every few minutes flicks off and then on again.

I have tried other HDMi cables without any luck, and all other inputs into my TV & receiver work fine. Both TV's inputs are fine through testing other devices which work its just my damn laptop!

With a brand new motherboard & fresh install I am all out of ideas!

This might sound a bit obvious but have you got the power pack plugged in?
I don't know about HDMI but I know from work that many laptops have issues with normal vga d-sub out if they are only running off battery.

    Re: Laptop HDMi very flaky

    Thanks mate, no luck though!

HDMI cable & second TV both work with mate apple laptop without any problems. My laptop also detects its connected to a SONY TV & the resolution. it also flickers the display when I plug the HDMi cable in.

Just nothing on the TV screen!

    Re: Laptop HDMi very flaky

Have you set it to clone the desktop across when HDMI is plugged in?

Mine was doing this just before I left uni, not sure if the cable was loose... But wiggling the cable and then going in to and setting up all the settings in the nvidia control panel fixed things for me...

fn + f5 normally switches between outputs (although it does vary on some laptops)

    Re: Laptop HDMi very flaky

Yep, tried that. Also checked settings in ATI Catalyst centre. Again, it detects when I am connected to my SONY TV, or when connected to my Sony AMP and the resolution. Signal is going both ways then, just something seems to be blocked 90% of the signal to my TV downstairs (ie after showing properly for approx 5 seconds it cuts out again) and 100% of the signal going to the TV upstairs!

Looks like another call to Dell to ask them to look into it. No doubt another 'new' motherboard, another day off work and another waste of my time!

    Re: Laptop HDMi very flaky

Guys, I am beyond furious as this is occurring again! Dell ended up replacing my last laptop over this issue (well, they mucked me around with it and I lost it with them...).

Once again worked fine one minute, next minute couldn't get it to work.

Whole new laptop, worked flawlessly for the last month on both my TVs. Now I cant get it to work with either of them. I have tried system restore, checked all settings & resolutions, tried disabling and enabling it, but nothing brings up the picture.

The TVs detect the presence of an HDMi cable, the laptop detects my Sony Amp and my SONY TV and the laptop swaps pictures/allows me to duplicate/extend etc but nothign appears on the external screen!

    My specs;

    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.30 GHz)
    Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
17.3in Full High Definition (1080p) LED Display with Anti-Glare
    6GB2 DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
    750GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)
    Optical Drive : 8x DVD+/-RW Optical Drive
    2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 130W
    7.23 lbs

Exact problem I am having, and have tried everything they suggested....

Any new suggestions? I am desperate here

Woah, I was dealing with a laptop with this exact issue to (An Acer). It also had a nVidia / Intel hybrid GPU, although not sure if related.

One thing that seemed to 'fix' it - uninstall / install the Intel drivers and it will magically work....until the next reboot.

I've not found a complete fix yet.

My last laptop, an old Dell Studio 17 didn't have the Nvidia/Intel GPU. It had an ATI Radoen 4xxx something.

    Re: Laptop HDMi very flaky

An update....whole new laptop started to have the problem...so I rang dell and they replaced the Motherboard. Motherboard worked fine for the first 2-3 weeks before suffering from the problem again. 3 TVs tried, laptop again detects the type of TV...TV detects an HDMI cable but nothing is passed through.

So 2 laptops, 5 motherboards always works for 2-3 weeks then randomly stops & never starts again. Never have I come across a problem like this which has left me so baffled & frustrated.

    Re: Laptop HDMi very flaky

We have the exact same issue. There is a long thread about it on the Intel forums.

The weird thing is even when you revert to a byte perfect image of the disk, the HDMI doesn't work. I was utterly convinced this was a hardware issue, but reinstalling the VGA drivers with the HDMI plugged in causes it to work right away.

It's by far the most infuriating issue I've come across too. I've even been flashing the Intel VGA BIOS hoping it was that but nothing.

Thanks mate, have you ever had any experience with trying the VGA port? I seem to suffer the same problem when connect that to a TV!
