I thought the benchmark for smooth playing was 30fps? Lucky I don't really play any modern games, my 4890 just wouldn't cope...
Depends on the kind of game. Something can look completely smooth at 24fps with correct motion blur, but you might notice the lag between your inputs and the rendered output. So games that need 'twitchy' controls are best at 60fps or higher, while more relaxed ones are fine at 30fps.
I play a lot of third person RPG-type games, and most of those are pretty smooth at 30fps. Dungeon Seige 3 runs at a fairly consistent 24fps and is lush and smooth, but then I also used to run Torchlight at 25-35fps and considered it lush and smooth; then an upgrade took me to 45+fps and the difference was actually noticable. I suspect that's more to do with frame latencies though - techreport now benchmark games using frame render times rather than straight fps, and it's a bit of an eye opener A game running at an average 30fps where no frame takes longer than 40ms to render would probably appear smoother than a game with an average 30fps but a significant number of 50ms frames. It's not all down to average framerates
EDIT: hmmm, perhaps it's time to say goodbye to the old 8800GTX ... even a 7750 can outpace it It'd be interesting to see benchmarks for the Trinity APUs in that little list - I doubt they're far behind my venerable old card...
