this is wierd: I took Efaills advice to up Vcore to try to improve stability. I went up to 1.700 and it made no diff. Then I decided to undervolt it (dont ask why!). So i put it down to 1.575 and Ive now been running P95 for 30 mins and it hasnt crashed out, previously my comp would crash/restart instantly.

Wtf is going on! im confused.

There is a point where any gain in voltage is offset by the negative effects of
increased heatload, as with everything its finding a balance within your system that falls in
line with the cooling you have.

Another possibility is power regulation, the increase in voltage could be over stressing
parts of the system or starving other parts of required power.

It sounds like your pc is overheating. Since reducing the clock reduces the heat output of a processor at a given clock. If it's now stable thought that great

A PC works best when closed, as this promotes a flow of air in/out of the case
cool air enters, take a path through the case passes the heatsink takes heat and exits.

having a case open and forcing air in does not allow free flowing movement if anything
you can cause an air void where the air blowing in forms a virtual bubble around the
processor leaving a hot zone in the middle.

Remember a desk fan is blowing air with its fins, most air is pushed at the
outer edges least at the inner edges, the center is a no air zone.
