    IDE Data probs - what you think ??

    Upgraded a mates PC the other day and been having a few probs. Got them sorted apart from one -

    When installing anything (OS, Games, Progs etc etc) I will get random copying errors e.g. "unable to copy file, press enter to retry" and messages like this. If I retry it will normally work but this sometimes takes a few attempts. The errors happen at random times as well so its not file errors i.e. it will report a corrupt file, try to install on another occasion and that file is fine.

    I assume its IDE related so here's what I have done so far -

    Replaced IDE cables
    Tried diff HDD's and CD drives
    Replaced PSU (this did improve things but still probs)
    CD's all work in other machines.

    I can copy files from CD to HDD manually. I then try to install from desktop (where I save files) and it will still error.

    SeaTools report all physical devices as ok but the data on the drive showing as corrupt.

    Have started an RMA on the MB (Gigabyte GA-7N400E-L) with Ebuyer as this is the only thing I can think of thats wrong.

    Throwing it in here to see if anyone can come up with anything else

    Ta

    1 - nope, standard clock speeds. Tried it underclocked and still same prob

    2 - tried standard and rounded, same fault

    3 - no idea, no place to set this in BIOS

    4 - nope, both on seperate channels.

    in my thinking...also try if you got the option locking in the AGP speed to e.g. 50mhz
    it maybe on an auto setting as AGP speed is linked to PCI speed on someboards so
    the AGP setting dictates the PCI bus speed which is bad.

    Else does sound board related but also try if you can swapping the memory incase
    you got a dud stick could be a case that when you file copying and the cache size
    goes up consuming more ram.. then its hitting the dud data area's of the ram maybe.

    Also try slacking off the memory timings or increasing the mem voltage up a bit.

    So I managed to change the board today and everything is working perfectly.

    Gigabyte = crap
    Asus = good
