    HDD recommendations

Looking to order a 2TB HDD for my FreeNAS machine. Needs to be quiet, fast and reliable
What is the HDD du jour at the moment? Used to be Samsung F1 a while back ( I have 2 1TB and they are fast and quiet but not sure what the scoop is now that Seagate own the brand).

The drive will be used for backups using acronis backup software,

    Re: HDD recommendations

I would say a HDD for a NAS need to be quiet, cool, power efficient (5400-5900 RPM) and ready for 24/7 run.
Your candidates are 2TB WD RED or 2TB WD Green from Scan.co.uk what I can see. Other websites may have a wider choice [Seagate Green of Samsung Spinpoint].
    I personally use 2x 3TB Hitachi's Deskstar 5K3000 in a Synology DS212j. Review at [ http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/3tb-hd...iew-32271.html ].
For 2TB drives check out this review [ http://www.storagereview.com/western...eview_wd30efrx ].

    Re: HDD recommendations

You welcome and report back how did it go. May be upgrading to a 4x HDD NAS this year (family is getting bigger) and those WD RED doesn't look that bad

    Re: HDD recommendations

Drive arrived, does what it says on the tin - quiet, low power. Performance not an issue as it is a backup drive (rsync to it daily at midnight)

    Looks good, congratulation.

Out of curiosity, what is your FreeNAS machine configuration, please?

    Re: HDD recommendations

Details including pics here - http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware/...-needed-3.html

Its an Intel ITX board, with everyting onboard (Video, Audio, 4 sata ports +eSata) running an Intel Dual Core E5200 CPU, 2X 2GB DDR2 800MhZ memory, Low profile cooler and 2 hard disks (expandable to three). OS is FreeNAS 8 running on a Compact Flash Card (internal card reader attached to SATA port). Added the extra 2GB RAM from original build as FreeNAS 8 ZFS config is supposed to need 6GB actually but I have no issues with current 4GB (max supported by mobo)
