    Quad-opteron?

Auction happening at work soon of old stuff ... there's apparently a quad-opteron PC going to be going cheap which isn't likely to have much interest ... any idea whether I'd be able to make much use of it? What'd it be good for, if anything? How much would it be worth?

Get Linux going on it i don´t think Windows would be much use as it wouldn´t support that processor configuration, i may be wrong on that, however i am sure you could find some use for it, no doubt.

Make a damn fine server (depending on what drives were in there).

Windows server 0S's support 4 processors.

    ?????

Quad-opteron pc. Thats 4 (F O U R) opterons. You said thier going cheap. If you consider it cheap (whatever the price is) then why the hell not. Does it have proccessors or is it just the mobo and box? Regardless there is a hundred an one things I think of that would need or go rediculously fast with 4 (F O U R damnit!) opterons.

    Hehe ... guess there's enthusiasm for quad-opteron!

The auction hasn't started yet, but once I have some specs I'll post on here and use my second-hand insider knowledge to maybe pick up a bargain

I work at a place where the serious techies are very few and far between. Probably only 4/5 people in an office of 40/50 (admittedly only half are in the tech department) who would even know what a quad opteron is, let alone actually want one.

Quad Opteron boxes have only been on the market for about 6 months! How can it be 'old'?!?!

bear in mind that cheap will probably be a relative term compared to the amount it cost, so if they've got any sense they'll be selling it for at least 2.5/3k+

hope im wrong though - good luck to you mate

Never mind my son, the path to age and skepticism is a long and winding one

Now a Quad Xeon, that I could have believed, and something like a 4 x 700MHz 1mb cache setup would still be well worth having.

That's the worst bit ... my old and faithful cynicism must've been on holiday that day ... I'm normally so good with tech-cynicism. I even laughed when they said SP2 would be an improvement!
