Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
Hi,
I'm looking for a good quality mouse surface but I'm restricted by my desk space so I need a small one (no larger than 290mm x 210mm). So far I have seen:
- Razer Kabuto
- Steelseries QcK Mini
- Corsair MM200 Compact
If anyone has any experience with any of these or has any other recommendations for me, I'd love to hear from you! :)
Thanks.
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
Steelseries 3HD
Similar to the QcK Mini but with a hard surface.
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
If you like hard surfaces then https://forums.ebuyer.com/showthread...e-Mat-Tutorial
cheap non-stick baking tray + some non-slip matting
I'm using this atm and it really does work well.
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
Thanks guys, I'm looking for a cloth surface (sorry should have mentioned that), but that baking tray one did make me lol.
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
I've never really understood the advantages of a cloth mat, I guess you can roll it up, but does it not get distorted over time?
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
Yes I agree they don't stand the test of time quite as well but I'm using a hard surface at the minute and I want something with a little bit more resistance. The QcK series are some of the world's most well regarded mouse surfaces, and the main series are cloth, so who am I to argue? :p
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
Both cloth and hard surfaces can have variable resistance. You can have a fast cloth surface or a slow hard surface.
Although I bet the baking tray doesn't provide much resistance!
I suspect cloth are more common because that's what people are used to from old office type mats.

Don't lol I'm deadly serious
My mouse mat IS a baking tray on some non-skid matting, if you want a low friction surface (which is what expensive mats give you) it works really really well.
The whole idea of using the baking tray came about a while back when someone (I think it was razor) released a metal mouse mat, which was teflon coated on one side and rubber on the other and people found it was exactly the same to use a baking tray and a quarter of the price.
Next time your in a supermarket pickup a cheap baking tray and try it for yourself.
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
Firstly low friction is a preference, not an absolute aim. Most gamers would prefer a little more resistance than a baking tray would provide. If you like ultra low friction then that's fine.
But friction (low or high) is not the only aim of a mouse mat, the primary aim would be to have a surface that responds reliably and accurately to the mouse sensor. I somehow doubt that a baking tray rivals a gaming grade mouse mat in that regard.
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
I know it's not cloth but i really like the Razer Sphex, it's great mainly because it stays in place and isn't obtrusive at all, it's like a skin for your desk, probably 1mm thick. The mouse glides on it however, so not much in terms of the resistance you're looking for.
Re: Compact Mouse Pads/Surfaces
Thanks for your help guys, I've gone for the Qck Mini and it's great! Shin555, I'm actually switching from the Sphex, it was just too thin for me, I wouldn't even call it 0.5mm thick. Thank you though :P
