My PC is making a high-pitched whistle sounds like a dog whistle, I've checked all the fans and held all the hard drives and casing but I don't know what it is.
Could it be hard drive failure on the way ?
I'm worried to restart it in case one of the hard drives is dying . anyone ever heard of anything similar?
I have an old hard drive which makes a high pitched noise. Try disconnecting one hdd at a time then switching your pc on. If the noise is gone its the disconnected hdd
yeah, most likely a HD on its way out, we have one in our server room at work thats been doing that for about 3 months now.

Both my WD2000JBs, and a WD600BB are doing this. They might be noisy but they're perfectly reliable. Check your HDD(s) SMART status and see if there is something wrong.

Okay I will do all this -these are great suggestions.
I will try moving around the drives sideways and I will make a full report when I have figured it out.
The only way to get the noise down is to keep the drive running. The noise is most noticible when cold start. Once I had the drive running for 5+ hours the noise drops down. After 100 hours its no louder than the fan.Originally Posted by viet cong zombi

im also having this problem. i've checked my S.M.A.R.T and used another program to make sure. every thing seems fine. Speed fans SMART says its 93% on performance and reliability. but the high whistle/squeal is still there. sounds like an old CRT monitor. Thought after having the PC for a few days now im noticing it less, particularly after a gaming sesh.
Still cause for concern?
Rolfcore may i ask what psu do you have? and do you have an kind of LEDs cathode tubes hooked up inside of your pc?
It was so small that mine wouldn't fit into it
