Mechanical Keyboard + Wine = Sad Biscuit :(

    Hi all,

At the weekend i spilt half a glass of wine on my lovely QPAD MK80. I immediately drained it, took it apart and cleaned it off, only to find the wine had got into some of the switches and made them sticky. I tried to flush them out a bit but it was quite late at this point (and i was already a bit drunk and dizzy from the wine and isopropynol) so i didnt get far.
I tackled it the next day by soaking the effected area in what left i had of my alcohol and working the switches to try and get the alcohol inside to dissolve some of the residue from the wine, but the switches are all still quite sticky and dont seem to have the lovely click they once had

I have got some more IPA ready to go but im not sure what tactic to take and wondered if anyone had any suggestions. I would hate to have to ditch the keyboard as i do love it.

I was thinking of picking up a cheap hair dryer and forcing it to dry quicker as previously i have been leaving it to dry for periods of time.

would some switch cleaner not be better?
    something like www.amazon.co.uk - Servisol-SUPER-Switch-Cleaning-Lubricant ?

I use it all the time on electrical microswitches on mobility scooters, even sprayed some on some PC bits once. but there is a warning with this though, on the servisol website it says not to use it on circuit boards.

it cleans all sorts of gunk off. air drys quite quick aswell.

See mine actually has USB ports and stuff built into it, aswell as backlighted keys so im a little bit dubious as to whether it would survive the dishwasher... thats my last resort.

What temperature setting and stuff should be used?

Getting the circuit boards out for me would require a LOT of soldering i reckon. Il try this switch cleaner stuff and then upload some photos if it gets me no-where

Get a tin of the spray used to remove sticky labels from laser printer rollers; it's called platenclene

Spray it on the keys and wipe off with a cotton bud.

I suppose i should say how I use it then? (may be incorrect way, but it works)

the can comes with a plastic nozzle tube thing, point that at the gunky bit/switch mechanism, do a short squirt, leave to evaporate for a lil' bit, see if gunk stil there.
the cleaner releases the gunk, and the blast from the spray can blows it off, all in one.

you could even mop up the gunk if its being blown to a edge/corner, using cotton buds or a piece of tissue paper.

*adjust squirting times depending on how gunky.

its simple really, probably didnt need to write this.

Re: Mechanical Keyboard + Wine = Sad Biscuit :(

problem being i cant really see inside the switch, i just have to spray it in there and work the switch to hope it clears it off. Suppose i could use tha to release any wine residue then give it a quick IPA bath to make sure its clean?

Re: Mechanical Keyboard + Wine = Sad Biscuit :(

    cant hurt it.

once squirted on, tip it up so the liquidy gunky stuff runs out. click switch a few times, it'll be fine. (he says)

if all this fails, at least you'll have a nice smelling squeeky clean keyboard to admire.

and as i found out today, the servisol spray gets rid of dog doody and dried mud, so if you get any of that on, you'll be sorted.

Re: Mechanical Keyboard + Wine = Sad Biscuit :(

Well more IPA arrived aswell as some compressed air, so i had another bosh at it.

If any keys are a bit sticky i have been pressing the switch down and spraying IPA into it until it fills up (i have a bottle with a squirty top now). As soon as its filled up i quickly start pressing it with quite a little bit of force in each lateral direction aswell as down/up, im hoping this will help scrape some of the residue free. Once it feels like its clicking better i have been blasting it with compressed air to try and get all the liquid out of the switch hoping that it takes the residue with it.

So far it seeeeemmmmmssssss better... but i will have to see what happens once its completely dry.
