    Fans and motherboard headers..

I have an Asus AN8-SLI-Dlx.. Was wondering if it could handle a CPU fan with a draw of 2.9w @ 12v ? Anyone know..?

    Advice, as always, much appreciated,
    S.

They can handle up to 2 amps (24w). Unfortunatly my cpu fan draws 2A (24W) so i never fancied running it as it would be so close to the limit.

What fan(s) do you run, Pudds? Must be a Delta or similar with that kind of draw..

tis a delta, because i have a 120mm focussed flow delta that takes a constant 24watts, i wouldnt say ALL motherboard's can take 24watts though, as i plugged it straight onto the motherboard, and it broke the header :/
    Under Development...

I've got a little circuit rigged up that lets me run 10A triggered from the motherboard header - usefull for variable fanspeed.

    Mmmm... relayed fan control <drools>

I thought I'd made my mind up about fans, and yet, here I am again worrying about them. How sad of me. I'd decided on the Luxotop 120 80CFM, but now I'm really consdering getting the Delta 120 FF because I'm worried about deadspots... aaarrrgghhhh.....

yeah its a delta 120mm 192cfm fan. I use a thermaltake fan controller which fits in a spare pci bracket, has a switch for low/medium/high, copes with it fine.

I can't imagine how loud that fan is.. I can guesstimate from the dB rating, but what kind of sound is it? Can you liken it to anything. I presume it would easily be heard above 3 x 80mm stock case fans, 2 x 6800GT/NV5 fans, 2 80mm PSU Fans, 2 Raptors (and a partridge in a pear tree)?

Also, how quiet does it go, as I would hope you could run it slow, if I decide on just a mild overclock for the time being?

    Much appreciated,
    S.

At full speed its hard to describe, id say its like a hoover sound but with a lot cleaner sound and hence not as annoying. Medium is a bit loud but tolerable, if i overclocked and it needed the medium setting i could run it at that fine. At low its fairly quite, you can hear it but its not very loud. Difference between low and high settings seem to be about 2-3C although i didnt get round to doing a lot of testing e.g really heavy loads so its not really needed although still nice to have the option.

How many dB is it? I run a 235 cfm 172mm fan on my radiator and at full whack it's damn noisy (54 dB according to spec). Also 235 cfm is an insane amount of air.

"Please note - this fan is not quiet!" LOL, no kidding!

The 172mm fan I run is HUGE, it's 50mm thick and weighs about 1Kg (has an Alu frame). You'd rip your board out of the case trying to mount it.

Quite right, thankyou. I gave in, and read the manual properly..
For the benefit of others considering this mobo:

    "CPU, Chassis, Chipset and Power fan connectors (3-pin CPU_FAN, 3-pin CHA1_FAN, 3-pin CHA2_FAN, 3-pin CHIP_FAN, 3-pin PWR_FAN) - The fan connectors support cooling fans of 350mA~2000mA (24W max.) or a total of 1A-3.48A (41.76W max.) at +12V."

Now all I gotta do, is choose a fan... <sighs>
