    Unhappy Help! NuShuttle's Shuttle Problem

    Hi all

Been working with PC's for about 15 years now but new convert to the whole SFF thing. I built myself a nice lil rig (see sig for spec) just after Xmas and now am having some problems with it shutting down, almost like its getting too hot or I've b0rked the configuration somewhere. Would anyone be kind enough to help me troubleshoot please? Let me know what info (PC Wizard or MBM) type data you need...

    Cheers

Erm - will get some temps tonight - the PWM seems to shoot up though - whats normal for this?

Yep - ditched the original 200 watter as it was noisy like a freight train.

I am thinking that it could be do with the Maxtor. I tried a simple defrag last night after posting and the bloody thing rebooted about 20% through (XP Home SP1) and was really slow to load again afterwards. I have it set as one big partition - maybe worth repart'ing as 2 drives?

    TIA for the help

I recommend partitioning with a 10GB drive for Windows and software as C:, then divide up the rest for things like stuff and games installations. Keeping the OS on the 10GB partition at the "front" of the drive will prevent the heads on the hard disk from having to move far to load the OS, as it all stays together on the outer-edge of the platter where there is a wider radius, and therefore the heads don't have to move so much

By the way, the maxtor SATA ones I have noticed are quite noisy during read/write operations, if you ditch it, get a nice Samsung SpinPoint, they have low heat output so it'll be good for the shuttle, and they are very quiet drives!

Right - here are some temps captured manually from the Award BIOS PC Health Status Screen... pc at idle - no software running apart from the BIOS

    initial temps

    System 31
    CPU 31
    PWM 32

    5 mins

    System 40
    CPU 41
    PWM 45

    Fan 1 1654RPM
    Fan 2 4821RPM

    10 mins

    System 45
    CPU 47
    PWM 51

    Fan 1 1654RPM
    Fan 3 4962RPM

    15 mins

    System 47
    CPU 49
    PWM 52

    Fan 1 1687RPM
    Fan 3 4821RPM

Heat..... Try to run Prime95! use it as a stress tester, and monitor the heat! MBM5 will create a log... after the system crashes restart and open up the log. See how hot she got!

Yep - that did it. Completely b0rked the machine after about 2 hours. However the temps were not hot and the Event Viewer showed some device driver errors but couldn't identify the driver

I think I did something wrong reinstall time!

Thanks for all the help - I'm off to read up on my PC's for Dummies book...

Well my new Samsung Spinpoint drive arrived, so I formatted it (using Debian boot CD ) with a 20GB boot partition and the rest for data and voila fast and silent - thank you so much for the advice...
