    Question Upgrade advice needed

Hi, I'm looking into upgrading my current setup and would like you're advice on what components I should upgrade and what I should upgrade to. My budget is probably going to be £200-300 and would be used for gaming. Here is my current setup:

    Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.4GHz
    Asus P5Q SE Plus motherboard
    4Gb Corsair Extreme2 DDR2
    ATI Radeon 4870 Graphics
    OCZ Agility 3 240GB SSD
    Hitachi 500GB HDD
    Corsair VX550 PSU

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

board chip and mem .. everything else is fine .. 8gig mem £45 .. mid range board £80-110.. drop rest on a cpu x6 or piledriver .... going intel will be dearer ..

If you were to go Intel, You could get an i5 3570k, A Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H Motherboard and 8gb of Vengeance RAM for about 280 pound?

    Re: Upgrade advice needed

Important question: do you want to play games, and if so what kind?

If you do, I'd go with an i3-2120 for £90, motherboard for £50, 8GB RAM for £40, and spend the rest on a new GPU. The GPU is the most important part for gaming, so the cheapest i3 available is the appropriate CPU for this budget.

The main games will be The Sims 3 and Simcity but will also include some FPS and simulation from time to time.

Right, well you need to spend about £100+ on your GPU. See my post above for parts, choose a GPU using this charts as a guide - http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

I just specced a similar machine for a customer and we went with a GTX 650 Ti.

    Re: Upgrade advice needed

My budget has increased and I've settled with the following spec

    AMD FX-6300
    Asrock 990FX Extreme3 motherboard
    Sapphire HD7850 OC Edition 2GB
    G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V
    £400 inc. Delivery

    Thoughts please?
Also would my current PSU be sufficient? It does have two 6 pin connectors.

Also thought about selling the old CPU, board, mem and GPU. How much do you think I could get for the lot?

System looks really good. As CAT has pointed out in the AMD - Piledriver chitchat thread, the FX6300 is a great CPU for gaming.

The PSU you have will be more than sufficient.

    Re: Upgrade advice needed

How much is the 7850? Because the 7870 is quite a jump up and a gtx 660 is a fair step up and only £150 OC'd on Scan.co.uk. Theres also a 7870 LE which apparently can be OC'd up to 7950 standard.

    Re: Upgrade advice needed

Thanks for the advice. I've now got my new system set up with the following:

    AMD FX-6300
    Asrock 990FX Extreme 3
    8GB Crucial Sports Ballistix 1600 DDR3
    Gigabyte 7870 OC Edition 2GB
    OCZ 650W PSU
    240GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD
    500GB Seagate External USB3.0 HDD

All wrapped up in a Antec One case

Can run Bioshock Infinite at maximum with no slowdown whatsoever.
