MORE MONEY than sence !!!
Let's not beat about the bush I have just been given a £5000 (not a typo) budget to spec a new build that will be used by numerous users of various abilities and requirements.
It will be indifferently treated, intermittently maintained and used well below it's eventual capacity.
However, none of that matters...I'm going off to have fun playing with various combinations of specs and I want you to come and play too!
How would you spend £5000...Anything goes in way of spec and peripherals but as it will be badly supported I don't think that self build water cooling solutions would be a good idea...On second thoughts what the hell"...fill ya boots.

Numerous users at once? Well either way with that sort of cash I'm thinking multi-CPU so something server like!
Re: MORE MONEY than sence !!!
Fill server with SSDs - job done.
Re: MORE MONEY than sence !!!
3 x Titans will quickly eat that up
Re: MORE MONEY than sence !!!
Re: MORE MONEY than sence !!!
Maybe I should have been a little more specific...it's going to be a Windows7 based PC with wired/wireless access to the internet. It will stand alone in this capacity. There was some mention of enabling direct fibre-optic connection. By numerous users I mean there will be many individuals using it individually.
Essentially we are talking high spec gaming rather than any sort of server here.
Don't take this too seriously I only meant it as a chance for people (myself included) who don't get the chance to spend this sort of money on a computer the chance to live the dream
Re: MORE MONEY than sence !!!
Have you told them what a crazy idea this is?! And that they could have 2-3 systems for the same price which would offer 90% of the performance of the one machine?!
Is it government funded by any chance?

It is the epitome of Gov't waste which I have railed against since I was first employed...
Department A has Budget X and Budget Y, they're sourced from separately.
Budget X has been overspent, Budget Y has been underspent and Gov't policy says that Y cannot be used for X so X is topped up from Source 1.
Additionally Source 2 has said (again Gov't policy) that if you don't use Budget Y this FY then you will lose what you haven't spent and next year Budget Y will be reduced by the underspend.
Man in charge of Budget Y is a Gadget freak and is renowned for impulsive end of year buys (£7000 smart board for one) so I have been told to spend £5000 on a PC.
IS IT ANY [*expletives*] WONDER THAT SUCCESSIVE [*expletives*] GOVERNMENTS CAN'T BALANCE THE BOOKS !

So he is willfully wasting public funds on frivolous purchases?? Isn't that kind of dodgy and isn't accounting meant to keep track of these things,so that money is not wasted??
So if he we help you spend £5000 on web browsing PC,we are actually screwing ourselves over with more tax rises to fund such waste.
****ing brilliant!! :censored:
Anything more than a Core i5 quad core is more than enough.
FFS,I know people in research labs, doing innovative research in the biosciences field who use less powerful PCs for basic office duties.
Re: MORE MONEY than sence !!!
Classic Hockey Stick budgeting. I thought this sort of thing had gone out years ago. Activity-based costing is where it's at... Or it was many years ago when I did an accountancy module...

That's the killer isn't it, and things always seem to have been that way so I can't imagine they will change. A little flexibility would go a long way.

Re: MORE MONEY than sence !!!
I found this:
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...bsd&cs=ukbsdt1
It is a Dell Optiflex all in one PC,which is part of their commerical range and it has a touchscreen too.
So change the CPU to a Core i5 3570S,add 8Gb of RAM,a 1TB hard drive, add the 5 year support option, the asset tagging and the Logitech Z320 speakers.
The total comes to £1099.99 excluding VAT and shipping, and probably closer to £1400 with VAT and shipping.
So,totally OTT for a web browsing PC,but it does include 5 years of support.
Edit!!
In fact,I would be more inclined to get the £598 desktop in this list:
http://www.dmxdimension.com/dell-uk/...on/#vostro-270
Again part of the the Dell commerical range.
Add the Dell S2340L monitor and premium 3 year support and it comes to around £826 including VAT and delivery.
Re: MORE MONEY than sence !!!
This kind of stuff is fairly well know. In fact, Terry Pratchett mocked something similar in the Lost Continent (I think although I could be wrong)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rincewind#Titles
Quote:
These titles and their accompanying tenure include the condition that he cannot have any salary, influence, or opinions. They do, however, include meals, his laundry done, and (as a result of all the impressive-sounding but essentially meaningless titles that have been bestowed upon him) up to eight buckets of coal a day during the entire year.
But instead of spending his yearly budget in a rush before the FY ends, Rincewind has to burn those eight buckets of coal every day even during the summer or he'll get none in the winter and freeze.

You are not alone in your anger Cat there are many people on the inside that highlight this wastage but, and I stress this most strongly, this way of working is the direct policy of at least 3 successive Governments and as such there is very little you can do to change it.
And if you think £5k is a lot to spend on a stand alone PC at least the department will own it...Under a contract that has been running about 8 years now, we (the taxpayer) are rented a single laptop (plus support) from a Private Consortium for between £2500 - £3000 a year.
Going back to the exercise above...I won't be recommending anything near that sum on a single PC but I will be recommending a reasonable package with some future proofing to replace the very very old machine that is in situ and I will be putting forward some better suggestions for the other £4500.

This is government thinking I fear, and is why millions of pounds are wasted a year (like why the MoD has a huge stockpile of stuff it will never use). You'd think it would be easy enough to put a stop to, but governments come, and governments go; nothing changes.
P.S. I'd be thinking about more than one machine, a decent low running cost printer and a fast wireless router.
