    Upgrade Advice please

    Hi All,

I'm looking to upgrade my current rig:

    • i7 930
    • Gigabyte X58-USB3
    • 6gb XM
    • XFX 850W psu
    • Gigabyte 7970
    • 64Gb Crucial M4

I mainly want to upgrade because my CPU is running quite hot at stock let alone when its overclocked and that my motherboard is being quite temperamental.

I've not got a budget per say but I don't need to change the PSU or monitor and I've got a copy of Win 7 from MSDN so thats not needed. So I only need recommendations for CPU,Cooler Case, Mobo and Ram.

Form factor I'm stuck between going for a nice build in a Bitfenix prodigy / going for full tower for the extra room and cooling performance. I'd also like to go with an AIO cooler like a H100i or a Swiftech H220.

    Any recommendations?

It could be that CPU heatspreader is not entirely flat. One of my mates had a hot running CPU and it was down to the heatspreader not being flat.

I have to say a Prodigy is tempting but you have to ask yourself do you really need a case that small? If space isn't a problem then by all means go with a midi or full tower

Also I would go with a larger SSD

Space isn't an issue its just the Prodigy looks very nice.

Yeah SSD's have came down in price so much since I purchased mine. I paid just over £100 for the 64gb M4 and now you can get 256gb for only a few £ more.

Any recommendations on a nice case that is quiet and can fit in a H100i / h220? I like the look of the 550d aesthetically but I'm not certain if its suitable. If I go for the h220 I'll be expanding it to include a GPU block too at some stage

    Re: Upgrade Advice please

Ok so I've decided I'm going to keep my i7 930 setup until haswel launches.

My question is atm its really really loud unfortunately, anyone have any suggestions on how to cool it down? I'm also considering picking up a h220 from swiftech as its a nice start to watercooling and easier than getting my own loop setup. My question is would I be able to buy an alternative mounting bracket when haswell comes out and has a different socket?

    Re: Upgrade Advice please

I don't think details have been released yet regarding mounting so best thing to do is wait till June so you can be sure to buy the correct kit

Cases I can think of are Corsair 600t, NZXT Phantom and Shinobi XL

    Re: Upgrade Advice please

Nanoxia DS1 is supposed to be very good for watercooling.

Edit: infact at CES this year Swiftech were showing off their H220 in Nanoxia DS1
