dvd writer & dvd rom connection

have installed a a Sata hard disk using a sata data cable so both the Primary and secondary IDE connectors are free. I have a Dvd writer drive and a dvd rom drive to connect but a bit confused about how to go about this, I have an 80-conductor ATA 66/100/133 cable (blue on one end and black at the other end. DVD writer set to master. which of the connectors do I use

    Thanks.

The blue end goes to the mobo! Either primary or secondary IDE.... The other 2 conectors go to the drives!

It doesn't make any difference really. If you want to copy direct from one drive to the other, you'll get best performance if you put the two drives on two seperate IDE channels, since IDE can't read and write at the same time. Otherwise though, don't worry about it.

I shall get another 80 ribbon cable and attach both the drives as master drives in separate ide channels.
    Thankx.

A 40 ribbon cable would do (not that there's any real price difference nowadays). Optical drives only run at ATA-33.

    GL anyway.

I dont have the luxury of a spare IDE channel so I have a pionneer DVR-RW and a DVD-Rom on the channel and TBH I havent had any probs with coping DVDs on the fly (or cds in my old 48speed liteon) although I will say that I am fairly carefull about what I run while i am doing it. BUT separate channels are better if U can do but generally dont worry if you cant.
