Using a PC as a pvr

I tried this years ago with a haupague tuner but results were patchy. Have things improved?

I want to be able to automatically record shows, preferably from an Internet stream, and save them digitally so I can stream them to my media player.

It should be automated so I can choose what I want to record from a guide of some sort then just leave it to do its job.

Does anything like this exist? I have an unused satellite I could use if need be.

Are you talking about a dedicated PC for this, or using your normal desktop for this as well?

If it's dedicated, then Mythtv is fab, otherwise try Windows Media Center or NextPVR on Windows.

Well you need a tuner card of some type if you want do do any kind of recording!

Pretty sure you won't be able to do it on the synology, not sure about the boxee, but I'd be surprised.

Hauppauge are ok, although expensive and driver support not great in linux.

I was wrong about the synology, btw:
