new board and cpu for home server recommends

Hi my whs v1 motherboard has just went (an8 ultra with an s939 opteron) so rather than hunt for a replacement board i have decided time to upgrade.

At the moment i have 8 drives to plug into it and having been out of the loop i am looking for some help on what to pick, should say it will be headless and atx is fine

    Thanks

You don't say what interface the drives are, and whether you want low power consumption, or high performance.

Possibly with what size the drives are as well.

From a Google of the board, you had interfaces for 4 SATA and 4 PATA drives?

PATA interfaces are pretty rare these days, if you have a bunch of 120GB PATA drives then time to stick all that data one a cheap single SATA drive I expect.

Were they in a RAID group using the NVIDIA RAID tools?

Or start a wanted thread to see if anyone has a couple of spare PCI IDE cards lying around...?

EDIT: actually, joking aside, it might be worth doign a wanted and buying stuff second hand - you could get some stuff that's newer and has had less working life than your outgoing parts but would still be a fair bit cheaper than a full new build.

If you do have PATA drives you want to keep, another option would be getting a converter. You can pick them up for about £5 each.... e.g. from PC world!

Nice, last time I bought converter it was a tenner. I figured for the cost of 4 of those, you could buy a brand new hard drive

Re: new board and cpu for home server recommends

I have a few of these converters, they're not brilliant, not designed for continuous usage I suspect as regular reboots were required when they stop responding.

Re: new board and cpu for home server recommends

HI thanks for the replies i have 4 sata drives plugged into the motherboard 1 pata plugged into the motherboard 2 sata into a pci expansion card and the last one is a sata connected by a sata x pata adaptor.

All sata drives are wd green drives and i am looking for a low power set up as it will be running headless and the os (whs 2011) is maxxed out in memory at 8Gb.
Tha pata drives will eventually get dropped in favour of sata ones over time, unless the new board is too good a deal and has no pata ports

    Thanks

Re: new board and cpu for home server recommends

The A85 motherboard I linked to is around £60 and has 8 SATA ports.

The A6 5400K dual core has an IGP and is around 3GHZ to 3.4GHZ Athlon II X2 level for the CPU.

If you don't need an IGP,I would get this CPU:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-a...che-65w-retail

    It is a quad core.

thanks CAT i think i will go igp as it saves getting a graphics card if i ever need to get into the bios or have a problem getting in remotely, can i ask why you recommend the A6 5400k over the A4 5300

    Thanks

Re: new board and cpu for home server recommends

Oops! I actually forgot about the A4 5300! Its only slightly slower than the A6-5400K but is around £15 cheaper,so it should also do the job. The better IGP in the A6-5400K is probably of no use in your case.

Any chance anyone knows if this board that cat recommends would work with server 2008 tried asking on gigabytes forums but no answer, or failing that any other board that does work with it

    Thanks

I see no reason to think that it wouldn't? What are you worried about?

Re: new board and cpu for home server recommends

afaik Server 2k8 uses the same driver model as Win 7, so it should be OK. I've never had problems with it, anyway (I've stuck the evaluation version on a few different rigs) although obviously I don't have that specific board.

Even without specific board drivers, I'd be amazed if WHS2011 didn't have suitable generic drivers anyway, which should work fine for everything you need...

Oh, and incidentally, if you do need a attach PATA drives to the board, I've got a couple of IDE cards kicking around doing nothing - I can't see anyone buying them off me, so I could probably chuck one your way for postage

Re: new board and cpu for home server recommends

I don't know how much grunt WHS needs, but I run a file/mail/web/music server with two drives in RAID 1 on a 1.2Ghz VIA CPU using Fedora Linux. There are few simultaneous users, it will stream mp3 to three or four separate players, serve web pages and files simultaneously quite happily. The power consumption is under 90W and it sits in a small mini ITX case.

The only time I feel the lack of processing power is when I am manipulating images for a photo indexing and sserver application (Gallery2) but that is a one off when new photos are added to the gallery.

Basic file serving does not need much CPU power.
