Need Some Memory Advice

Hi Guys,

My friend has asked me to get him some new RAM, he wants some half decent stuff but not by any means top of the range overclocking material, any anyone push me in the right direction for some memory that won’t go bang or cost the earth?

I have been out of the market for too long!

Crucial are usually as reliable as half a brick in a sock; I've got some of their ECC stuff in use on my servers and it's very steady. Outside of that, I've used Kingston without problems, and my home machine uses TwinMOS w/Winbond chips. Touch wood, all steady as a rock so far.

yeah i was thinking Crucial, how do places like ebuyer knock out there branded stuff so cheap? not that i would get any of it... but its' so cheap!

Well, they have the KingMax stuff which is supposed to be pretty good, sometimes on special offer too...

Corsair value is really good stuff

Been using Corsair Value for around 2 weeks now. Bought it because it was pretty much the same price as Crucial but had slightly tighter timings (CAS 2.5 vs CAS 3).

Been impressed with it so far and I'm reassured that it comes with a lifetime warranty like Crucial's stuff.

I'm a little surprised nobody asked you what your friend's computer is or how much memory he wants, or even what he's using it for. Pretty hard to make a meaningful recommendation without this information.

It would be hard to recommend a specific part; where one has experience of several different parts from the same manufacturer and all perform consistently well or consistently poorly, it's actually pretty easy. I mention Crucial, since I have used multiple types of SDR and DDR RAM from them in both desktops and laptops; likewise Kingston.

the computer is not built yet, it will have an Abit nf7 mobo with a AMD 3000+ 400 chip, but he on a tight budjet so looking to spend around £65 on ram (512)

You'll easily get 512MB of decent memory for that; Corsair Value Select 2x256MB PC3200 kit from Dabs, £57.98 inc VAT seems a good bet to me.He could easily run that synchronously with the FSB of his 3000+, which counts for quite a lot with nForce2 boards. Actually, I'd assume that's the stuff Aaron's running as he noted above.

edit: And remember to read the manual on slot placement for dual channel operation .
