Re: Place to buy stateside
I'd suggest that you contact your CC company well in advance to let them know of your plans, as if you don't let them know, they may not authorize the buys due to the delivery address.
Plus I 2nd TeePee suggestion of Newegg, they have a good rep in the US.
Re: Place to buy stateside
Newegg seem to have a massive market share on PC components over there!
Re: Place to buy stateside
Microcenter do some good deals too,and they are usually instore.

I would get that in the UK,as you are more likely to have issues with them, compared to a CPU or HDD. However,I would also make sure the HDDs work in the US too.
Re: Place to buy stateside
I'll second Newegg, Amazon, and Microcenter...all good options. SuperBiiz, Tiger Direct, Mwave, are also fairly large etailers that occasionally have compelling deals. Sidewinder Computers, FrozenCPU, and Koolertek are good smaller etailers that specialize in cooling.
CAT-THE-FIFTH is also correct, CLCs and mechanical HDDs have an extreme bathtub-curve on failure rates, so you want to be able to use them a while before it becomes difficult to have them replaced. A brand new drive is nearly an order of magnitude more likely to fail than one that has run error free for a month.
Re: Place to buy stateside
+1 for Newegg. Big range of parts...
Re: Place to buy stateside
When I lived over there for 18 months in 2009/10 Newegg was definitely the etailer of choice. You needed to be careful of a couple of things though:
1. Lots of deals have "cashbacks", which take time; so I'd discount any such deals
2. Might have problems with delivery, as the cardholder's address won't be the address he's staying at. I ended up opening a US bank account to get round this. Maybe things have gotten better.
