Removing balck iky stuff from processor core

I recently came into possetion of an old 1.2Ghz athlon system, its a Mesh system that i was going to stick in a shuttle and give to my sister for her birthday. However after taking the HSF off the CPU core was left with this black sticky stuff over it almost looks like some kind of glue. Anybody got iny ideas how to get it off?

Does he mean acetone? I would personally avoid acetone as it does tend to attack most plastics. The preferred solvent imo is isopropanol which should be available from maplins.

i have used aceton fro ages and never had a problem with it. isopropanol is very hard to get at least round my area.

Nail polish contains acetone All that it is extra is perfume and stuff

We've never put any type of glue on our components (although it was a consideration when AGP came out and cards wouldn't stay put).

The only stuff we've ever used was the heat compound you normally get with fans today.

I take it the components were working prior to your disassembly, no sign overheating (thinking of burnt heat compound here)?

I had the same stuff on an old Thunderbird 1000 that was on a Mesh system bought in about 2000 - it had fastened itself quite strongly to the HSF so may have been whatever brand was used at the time. It had been overclocked a bit so increased temps may have caused it. Used nail varnish remover to get it off. You just have to be careful with the plasticky lugs on each corer of the cpu as it'll try and melt them.

am thinking it may be a intel p4 system and iirc the intel retail heatsink have some sort of black thermal compound on them which is a pain to remove ?

like i said i have used acetone with no problems to clean tracks/contacts/cpu's basicly anything that needs to make contact just to be sure that any grease is removed

also i will note that i have never seen any temp differences between the different products, the only one i would not use is nail polish due to the oils that are in it

Ive never noticed differences with whatever i used
